We all know BMW keeps some cool cars in their BMW Classic vault collection. But how about Police, EMT and Fire Dept cars! Well... here are some really cool pics inside the deep climate controlled garage at BMW Classic. All these cats were really used in public service - except for the F10 M5. The M5 was built as a show car for exhibition shows. It's also a USA model, since its a manual trans and front side reflectors.

Take a look at the collection. I think its really cool that BMW holds onto these "classics" once they are finished being used by local authorities.

I'm more impressed that the M5 is a stick.

I'm more curious why the M5 has the German police markings but is a US spec car. Would think it's simply cause they would've made it for the German police if they asked/purchased

Excellent cars... I know the UK police had some unmarked M5's as motorway cars in the past... to keep up with the bad guys!

The F10 M5 with the 6-speed manual is awesome and the phone in the E34 is so cool. Thanks Dackleone.

Looks like they might control the roof lights/siren: http://www.bimmertoday.de/2012/09/04...n-autobahn-10/

Another cool thing about the M5 - roof rails! On a sedan!

Yep, those red and yellow buttons are placed in the i-Drive controller for easy & quick access of the lights and siren modes.

Weiman the reason for those roof rails is bc that gives the Police cars a higher top speed than with the lightbar bonded/glued to the roof. Those roof lights really cut down on the car's top speed & acceleration. I don't know what the v-max is with the roof rails... but I am sure its better bc the air car move under the light bar.

Btw... a German Polizei car model costs about 35% more than a standard car. It's also normal to see these police cars still in service. That always blows me away when I see an e39 or e46 police car live on the streets today.

I wonder what happened to the E36 M3 sedan that BMW gifted to the Bavarian state police. It was the 50,000th M3 built.

I suspect that e36 M3 is locked up in storage somewhere only to be used in VIP events or parades. Like this e38 7er I spotted a few years back in the Niederlassung garage in Munich.

Most German Police depts would rather buy several police cars rather than ONE M5 Police car. Most "normal" M5's sell for around ~140K euros. Add in 35% for a police model and it doesn't make sense for small police depts over here. Plus the fuel and insurance and higher service required for a ///M model. Most Polizei cars are diesels over here. Some are quite quick, but most are diesels.

I found a few more pics of that F10 M5 from a few years back a the BMW Welt...

There were quite a few of them in Germany. They are based on the Security models. Back in 2011 Germany government auctioned off a bunch of them with over 400,000km on them.
