My '17 Toyota may be reliable, but fit and finish is another story.

Seriously though, I'm glad BMW is becoming more dependable but 7 is still a little on the low side considering it is the top automaker.

I would say that for most a Porsche is not a daily driver. Not like a Camry or a 3 series. Most 911s or caymans are a second car and as a result don't rack up the miles of a daily.

I didn't see if JD took their readings based on miles and time or just 12 months but I don't remember seeing any average mileage on their. And you're much more likely to come across problems at 15k miles a year over say 5-8k for a second car or 3-5k for a weekend warrior

Surprised at a few spots....Acura being so low, Audi barely above average and Jags really stepping up their game because a few years ago Jags were crap.
Who allowed you into the party? Lexus and Porsche are ranked the same. Look at the actual problems per vehicle. They are listed in alphabetical order. You must be one of those fake news posters on facebook... you dont even actually read things.

Wtf? I get it douchebag. They're ranked the same. Porsche normally ranks #2 after Lexus in past tests which to most consumers means a lot. Thanks for edumacating me smart-ass.

Great news that my BMW has better than average factory defects out of the box. I'm sure 10 years down the road it would be a different story.

So far, knock on wood, no issues in one year I have exhibited no problems except the passenger window one time refusing to go down and then it resolved itself and has not returned and the stereo magically playing on right side and then the left side speakers and the right side and that magically went away.

Well the figures here suggest you should be doing just the opposite!!

But then I guess most Porsche's are not daily drivers, doing far less miles than the average car!

Looking at the UK table above (albeit for 2016) the results appear to totally contradict those for the US!! Does that maybe suggest that American brands in general are far more unreliable than European brands, thus helping BMW to sit much higher in this particular table? (obviously many of the European brands don't appear in the US table and virtually no American brands appear in the UK table)

I put no stock in these numbers. It's all very dependent on the poll criteria. The only reliability that matters is of the model of vehicle that you own anyway. Who cares if Hyundai, for example, has a good ranking here but you own a model with a design flaw that causes the engine to grenade at 25k miles.

I had my G35 for 9 years before picking up the M. I'm in agreement with you. Great car. I had a 2015 loaner and it had issues connecting with my phone via Bluetooth. Add to the fact that if their is an update you have to beg the dealer for it and most of the time they still won't. This is probably what dragged them so far down the list. It's a shame because their dual screen setup

So they bring their car in for service as an issue which creates these quality issue problems when it actually wasn't a problem to begin with. Happens a lot with new 7-Series owners and older-aged customers who have a hard time grasping all the technology and amenities the car offers.

All the major brands like BMW, Benz and Lexus send trainers to dealers to help identify these false issues that would trigger a "problem" so they can boost these JDP scores
+1 to this. I think JD Power's definition of problem is pretty liberal. Issues that are not necessarily malfunctions, but perhaps customers having a slight problem with getting something to work smoothly (aforementioned Bluetooth, media streaming, nav software) can all count as a "problem." Basically their definition is essentially something not working as user expected, which is pretty broad since it potentially encompasses issues that may otherwise be a result of poor design.

I agree there could be some correlation here with the perceived quality of the car and how well it's designed / made - however it may not be the most accurate prediction of how reliable a car will be, especially in the long run.

Maybe they already did this in their rating system and I got this wrong, but it would've been cool to see JD Power provide a better clarification of "problems," or at least some prioritized scoring system that would factor in the fact that not all problems are equal (e.g. Bluetooth difficulties, or even a malfunction, is different in magnitude than an engine component failure).

It's always what the consumer's expectations are of the brand going in. Someone who is paying $100k for their car has very different expectations of quality, reliability, durability than someone who can only afford $25k car. That's a big factor.

Lmao , you do not remove a quarter panel on a 911 for an oil change . Just the engine cover .And it costs no more than an oil change on a BMW .
