Tyreweld for non runflats (or stick with runflats)

Current tyres are running a bit low at 3mm on all corners.

I was convinced that my next choice would be non runflats (Goodyear F1 Asymmetrical 3's) with Tyreweld and a compressor in the boot, but I read a thread about a member saying that if he was in the car on his own then TyreWeld and compressor is fine, but with the wife driving with 2 kids in the back then this is more of a problem.

I don't really know as I have always had a spare in previous cars and have never used Tyreweld. Don't know if this would just be a nightmare for my missus.

You guys had much experience with the stuff? Would you risk non runflats or stick with the runflats?

Once used... does slime ruin the tire you emptied a bottle of gunk into? What about cleaning the wheel? Seems like it would be a HUGE mess after the fact... just wondering. Being stranded isnt a great tradeoff - just never used the stuff before.

I've had one puncture in 3 years with my F31, and that was in a runflat in the first 6 months.

Two and a half years later with Michelin Pilot Super Sports and recently with MP4S, no punctures.

What are the current stats regarding frequency of punctures ? I think I read that it's something like one per 90K miles. Unless you're very unlucky it just doesn't happen very often and is rarely anything more than a screw/nail.

TyreWeld or Slime plus a compressor should be fine for the vast majority of punctures. If it's something more serious there's always BMW Assist, if you have that cover.

Switching to non-RFT gives the benefit of improved ride all year round.

Slime washes out fine. Not something you'd have to do as the puncture repairer would wash out the tyre before repairing

I went non RFT as soon as my rotated Pirelli P7 wore out at 41k.

Went with Conti DWS06, installed by Goodyear with an alignment for $950, FYI. BMW wanted $1150 without alignment.

They will order any tire you want. Had mine the next day. Was torn between these and the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S.

Went with these because they were a hair cheaper and Ive always wanted to ride Conti's (but never have).

Here is my 328 on the rack at Goodyear in Elk Grove, CA.

Has any one tried these?

I once repaired my own tyre (none of the sheep garages around me would touch run flats for less then £30) I never had any issues in about 8k miles

Ride quality was the reason for wanting to go down the non runflats route.

I may just chance it and get a Slime repair kit and the F1's. If my missus happens to get a flat she can just deal with it

That's the kit that I saw on Amazon... had mostly favorable reviews, but some saying that the compressor just didn't work when they got a flat. I'm surprised that they didn't test the compressor first before sticking the kit in their car...

My A-Class came with run flats and were loud and stiff which affected the handling. Ive since put F1 Asymetric 3's on it and it drives like a completely different car.

The only time I did get a puncture with the run flats it tore a hole in the actual tread so the tyre slime was no good and had to get recovered anyway!

Yes. Literally dozens of times. Not sure this would be possible to use on the side of road with wheel still on car but... my go to method for repairing a puncture on my own.

Talk about bad timing... missus has had 2 flat tires in 2 days on her cycle commute to work and had gunk to fix the punctures which didn't work on either flat.

This has her convinced (despite my reassurances) that gunk and compressor is too much hassle, then she brought up the whole "Well, if the kids are screaming in the back and I have to deal with this stuff..." to which I cant really argue so it looks like I am sticking to run-flats...

Any recommendations from you guys? Are the F1 A3's still a good choice for Runflats?

Yes!!

My missus e70 X5 had a screw go into the rear tyre (naturally, being the larger ones...) and right through the very corner of where the tread meets the sidewall (naturally, being the completely unrepairable section) - the screw also went in head first, not pointy end first

That was running normal tyres, because aside from all the known complaints about runflats, the cost per corner on 20" wheels running 265 fronts and 315 rears was frankly laughable.

Anyway, I used one of those on that hole after I'd removed the screw.

Pumped the tyre back up to normal pressure and then didn't drive it all weekend until Monday, when I was going to my tyre guy to have what turned out to be 4 new tyres.

However, the repair completely held air all weekend, and then just for shits and giggles, I checked the pressure after the 30min or so drive to the tyre place, and it was perfect, hadn't lost any at all.

Clearly not a permanent repair by any stretch of the imagination, but for getting you out of the shit when you've had a 6" nail or something go through the tyre, bloody great.

I haven't checked mine either. I will have to plug it in and check it, now that you mention it.
