Washed my key!!! (help E90Post?)

My girlfriend picked up my trousers that weren't in the laundry basket and washed them without telling me first and without checking the pockets properly, and my key was in them .

All seemed to still be working but now, while the buttons work, Comfort Access has stopped working and the car doesn't recognise the key being in the cabin unless it's right next to the steering wheel column. I have my spare so it's not the end of the world.

Once the key's dried out completely, what are my chances of just telling BMW that it's faulty and getting them to fix it under warranty? Is there a dampness sensor inside it like with most modern phones to tell BMW that it's gotten wet?

don't know on them finding out about water damage- i doubt its like apple products where there are water damage sensors. anyway, try letting it sit in dry rice for 24hrs. if it doesn't work after that then try the warranty. if that doesn't work, use the back up key if you don't want to pay for a new one.

The dry rice thing is really effective!
Be sure to leave it in for at least 24 hours as he said.

Thanks all! My gf has put they key in some rice so we'll see if it's any better tomorrow. She read elsewhere online that they key should be left in sunlight to dry out but it's so hot at the moment that I'm not sure leaving any battery-powered electronics, especially encased in black plastic, in the sun is going to do more good than harm.

I'll report back if it starts to work again or if not, whether BMW replace it under warranty.

Instead of lying to the dealer, when you might get caught if they discover evidence of moisture inside the key, why don't you just buy a new key, and then take $400 (to cover the cost of the new key) from the service department's cash drawer when they are not looking?

Assuming you have a pretty good relationship with your dealership and that your car is relatively new, I don't think they are going to trouble you that much if you need a replacement.

That being said, a new replacement key + coding for your vehicle is ~300 pounds.

The rice thing works for cell phones that have been dunked, so should probably work here too.

Of course with cell phones it's such a common occurrence that they have bits of litmus paper in various places inside to tell them whether it was exposed to moisture or not. Can't imagine the key fob has any though.

the worst thing you can do to electronics that are wet or might still be wet is use them in anyway shape or form, it might short the electronics within and then they wouldn't work in general. and considering the fobs and technology within cost as much as some cellphones do nowadays, it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if there was a dampness sensor.

Yeah, but if you try to pull one on them they might wonder what else you've lied to them about, but like you said it's alllll about the relationship.

The comfort access equivalent fobs for VW's can cost like $300 for fob + cloning it to the car, so add a bmw premium to that and it probably isnt cheap.

The worst think is I already knew that but I was so annoyed with my girlfriend that I used it anyway before thinking about what I was doing. Which meant that I was at least annoyed with myself for being an idiot as I was with her for being careless.

Anyway, update...

After a night in some rice, the key.... didn't work.

After 6 hours or so in direct sunlight today... IT WORKS!!!

Comfort access, ignition, buttons, everything.

Pretty damn impressive TBH - being washed isn't a short dunk, it's full, long-term submersion; if it didn't kill the electronics I'd have expected it to kill the batteries. I know people complain about the size of the key but I think BMW's excellent design and over-engineering have done themselves proud here.

Nice to see your problem solved.
By the way in our country we have two types of insurance
1-Mandatory
2-"comprehensive insurance" i guess and this has several option

When you get near full options on the second one, insurance will cover any influence to car keys "stolen lost drop ext." even if your belongings stolen from your car pays up to 1000$

Tbh I probably do 2/3 to 3/4 of the washing, and always check all the pockets of everything just before it goes in... I was annoyed because she did something similar a while back resulting in paper tissues getting in the laundry and it looked like she hadn't learned from that!

Why, because my partner does 1/4 of our collective laundry?

I am a lucky dude but not because of that! (because she's an amazing cook! )
