Thought about that, and I've owned two GTIs over the years. Great cars... but I can't picture living without RWD anymore. Plus IIRC the VW lease terms aren't great (could be wrong about this).

Worth exploring... though when I run the numbers the monthly payment is within 10% of what I'm paying now. But definitely worth considering.

That is not going to lower his monthly payment.

True, I may save only $30-$50 per month but there are a couple of extenuating factors:

1) Wife wants me to get out of BMW, get a Honda/Toyota instead and save $300/month. Logically this makes sense and for her, emotionally, the idea of saving money is key. So... ANY drop in monthly payment will be helpful (obviously nowhere near the drop I'd see if I leased a Camry, but optically it will seem like a concession on my part).

2) I need to go from 10k/year to 12k, meaning an extra $25 or so per month. I definitely can't go up on the monthly payment (see factor #1 above), so need to find a way to bring it down.

3) Re ordering... that's tempting BUT I'm up against my miles AND my rear tires are just about to need replacing... so hoping to turn existing car in ASAP.

Anyway... obviously I just need to decide what I can live with, as most have pointed out... the problem is I don't see how I can live without msport/leather/nav/driver assist... may need to consider MSDs.
I can definitely appreciate your position. For me it's balancing a car that I feel is worth the price. And it's hard to see a Camry lease on TV for $159 a month when a BMW is >2x that. But I think we all feel a BMW is worth it or we wouldn't have one. I for one pass on driver assist and Nav. I have a $200 Garmin or Waze if I need directions. No need to pay $2k+ for Nav with a bigger screen (I hate that BMW plopped it on the top of the dash). You can probably grab used tires for the rears and not pay full replacement price.

Like I said in the previous post. A similarly optioned 328i isn't much less that a 340i. It's like 3-5k difference, so with your logic, everyone should get a 340i since it's only 50$
We are in agreement. Optioned 328 isnt much less than a 340.

Yup those werent the latest numbers. I was just giving an example with #s to back up where i got the $50, from when i shopped for my wife's car a few months ago

I get it for sure. That last $50/mo or appx $2k /yr can matter. I myself got a 328 instead of 335 in the past for a $50/mo savings. Worse way to save $50/mo in my opinion. Figured it was ok since car was for MRS but it mattered to me more than I thought it would at first

OP, in your shoes i would go to an older m car. Save more money, likely gain in fun, and have a bigger savings to message to the MRS.

Hi everyone

Sorry to raise this thread from the dead, but wanted to close the loop.

As a reminder, I was looking to get into a new 340i with a lower monthly payment (to preserve marital bliss). Challenge is -- I need to go from 10k miles/year to 15k -- which obviously has a huge impact on lease payment. Adding to that, BMWFS bumped their base money factor in May, and also at this point BMWFS is not extending any kind of loyalty cash.

After a ton of agonizing about what to do (i.e., 328 vs 340), I admitted to myself I need the B58. The 328 is a terrific car and the engine is really impressive, but in the end I knew I'd be unhappy without the bigger engine. I resigned myself to getting into a no/low option 340, deciding I could live without leather, nav, M Sport and 19" wheels.

BUT -- I stumbled upon a heavily discounted 2016 340i with M Sport, Driver Assist, leather, nav, 403M 19's AND ZLP/adaptive lighting. It had been in inventory for several months so the discount was more than 10% off MSRP.

The other factor was I came around to the idea of multiple security deposits (MSDs), to bring the MF down.

So -- with the discount and the addition of MSDs, I got all the car I wanted WITH 15k miles/year at a payment of $50 LESS than my previous payment.

My wife is happy (not thrilled -- she would still rather see me in a Camry)... but at least she recognizes that the payment is lower, which was the objective.

Here are a couple of iPhone pics. Alpine White wasn't my first choice... but I have to say the color has really grown on me. A nice change of pace after more than 10 years with black cars.

Huge thanks for all the input and advice!

Personally, I could do without the Nav, I use Waze pretty much exclusively, and even with the real time traffic, I used to put my destination in both, and Waze was hands down the best option. The connected drive stuff is useless in my opinion, at least here in Canada.

I also would rather have the vinyl instead of the leather.

I just had a loaner without the M-Sport, and if you are more interested in comfort, that would be the way to go to save some $$$, personally I am a 15 year old when corners, I am their to clip their apexes and hear some squealing (sounds dirtier than it is!).

The driver assistance stuff I could do without, I really do like the top down camera, but I am capable of keeping in the lane myself, and I instinctually do a shoulder check. I also am fine with avoiding collisions all by self. I do like the top down camera though!

I would also pay for the 340 motor and be happy doing it, it is sublime.

I can't speak about the current car, but I have driven on iDrive cars and the phone pairs with the car then you use Siri or Google Assistant to make calls, although I am pretty sure the phone still transfers the phone book as well.

B.

For the first few months I ran WAZE or Google Maps in parallel with my car's nav system and I consistently found that BMW's navigation w/ RTT was as good as my phone's, and always within 1 or 2 minutes of my phone's ETA (in either direction). So I really don't understand why people on here keep saying BMW's nav is trash, maybe they've only used the older CIC system and the NBT is much better?

The nav would be easy to live without in the age of Waze and other apps. But the extra screen real estate is nice (the smaller screen would personally always remind me of the option I didn't get), and I do like having a moving birds-eye view map of my location as I drive, even though I tend to rely on Waze for navigation.

The Nav package falls into the "nice to have" category... then again so do most options. I'm glad I have it.

How about looking for a 335 with the Msport / tech pack/ driver assist ... You would be able to get all your options and get a good deal. There's still 335 on the lots

The best part about the NAV with HUD is you can turn off the voice/audio prompts and just let the HUD direct you. That means no interruptions to my tunes/podcast/audiobooks. The only thing I like waze for is pointing out cops. I only got the HUD because I bought off the lot, but I am glad I got it now.

Congrats!! I was about to post that you can find heavily discounted loaded 340s in the LA area, but looks like you already did. My 340 was over $60k MSRP but I got it for $51k.

Here's an option for you to consider: Do European Delivery and take the money you saved and get everything you want.

Whatever you decide on options, 340 is an awesome car. Good luck!

Don't know if you'd stick with another 335 or be bored but my guy at Main Line has a fully loaded $63k car w 1800 miles on his lot for $44k. Exec demo. They don't sell well here bc everyone wants AWD. Would lease out in the low $400s. Just any idea to save some scratch.
