Had servotronic on my first and now have vss. The vss has noticeably less dead band, glad I went for it but it's not drastically different.

Why would you be interested? have you seen the error of your ways? has the lustre of the Golf worn off?

BTW VSS it's superb on the 2 series and makes the Mercedes steering barge like.

I think 330d and above, and probably 328i and above, have Servotronic as standard. Lower engine models can have Servo or VSS added as an option (I think).
On my 335d it's Servotronic but this came as standard.

VSS is better in terms of less arm twirling when going around mini roundabouts or pulling out of junctions etc......... I love it.

The basics of HPAS or EPS.

Standard power steering typically has a fixed amount of assistance, hence requires more effort at low speeds and can seem too light at speed.

Servotronic is electronically controlled and speed sensitive. More assistance at low speeds, as in parking and slow manoeuvres, less assistance as speed increases, more weight/stiffness at speed.

Variable 'sport' rack as in VSS, reduces the amount of steering wheel movement off centre. Better for turns and slow speed manoeuvres, not over sensitive driving straight at speed, still retains a similar steering ratio at mid position. 'Lock to lock' uses less turns of the wheel. Add in servotronic and VSS should be the best of both worlds. Not everyone gets the 'variable cut rack' concept, even if weighting is well judged.

M3/M4 has a version of VSS as standard, so view VSS as the top end steering option.

Although VSS may be the top of the range steering option, In my personal opinion I am not a fan of it.
I had an M4 for a week quite recently and personally thought the servo steering in the 3d felt better.

Each to their own though I suppose.

Not the same, f30 VSS is made by Thyssenkrupp. The f80 steering and also Servotronic are both made by ZF

Would you go as far as to say the VSS in the F30 is better than the one in the F80?

Difficult to say.....I think there is more feel to the F30 VSS, but that could be due to the smaller tyres and different geo. Makes it feel a little more nimble.
