It Might Be A Good Time Get A New 3 Series
Looking at 3 Series sales through November it might be a good time to buy or lease a 3 Series. Dealers should be anxious to move some cars.
Nov '16: 5,411 (-36%) YTD thru Nov '16: 63,718 (-29%) |

Don't think so. They should keep their cycle because it's too expensive to shorten it.
The proper sales figure to look at is F30 sales from SOL-present. Without knowing the cost structure, my bet is that they've sold enough worldwide that each they have broke even and each additional car only Costs them unit costs and overhead.

BMW likes to compare current sales against the previous gen for the same period in the model's lifecycle. So in this case something like Nov 2016 vs Nov 2010. They're happy if that comparison meets their predicted growth number, vs looking at the absolute number or prior calendar year.

This exact same topic is going on another board. BMW had a record year in the US in 2015. YoY has been down for 2016 in the US but they've been doing good worldwide. Seems like they are not chasing the sales crown this year here (evidenced by lack of sales support). No real incentive to "push" the cars now. Let's see if they start fresh next month to start off strong in 2017.

340i is the car to have and look how many sell, I don't agree at all.

the only way I would buy an f30 with the g20 coming out in a year or so, would by with 10K off msrp. They are full of inventory right now and there is no relief in site.

With SOP F30 LCI being 10-2018, introduction will be winter 2018, first deliveries early 2019. There should be at least another 2 years of life in the F30. It will finish the 7 year cycle as normally.

Interesting, OP quoted the same numbers I did in negotiations with our local dealer to get out of the 340 into a new M3. They are offering me a sales price of $71,345 on a Competition+Exec Package M3 with DCT that stickers at a little over 80K. Not sure that's still enough to make the move, but glad to see someone else sees the BMW sales data as a possible negotiation point

I hate to say it, but yes. It's still a fantastic car for daily driving and occasional track day for novice or intermediate student, but its lack of camber really limits turn in (it simply pushes way too much) and I don't want to mod a lease with camber plates or coilovers to resolve that. The open diff also presented some issues on tight corners with putting power down. An LSD would solve that, but again don't want to drop $2500 on a mod for a leased car.
In the end it was no fun being the slowest out in the instructor group where I had been running mid-pack and playing around with other cars that run similar lap times (mid 2:30's at COTA), the 340 was in the mid 2:40's so it's a big delta in pace. I guess my ego might be playing a part in this, as I do really like the car. But I tend to make impulsive moves on cars - in the last year and a half have gone from an E90 335 to an E90 M3 to this F30 340i. Might as well complete the transformation and get with an F80 Seriously, had the S65 not started making ominous engine sounds and top end clatter, I would have kept it. Just didn't want to risk replacing a $10-15K motor out of warranty. OP, sorry for the thread-jack! |
