On the second angle you can hear things aren't right before it stops. Sorry to hear this; best of luck getting her going again and hope the damage isn't too bad.

Yup, when the engine gave out, it sounded like something shattered in the engine.

Thread subject is misleading. Engine did not fail it it was modded. You blew your engine.

Likely an issue with the turbo. I assume extra boost, but how much?

If boost was increased, did you change that down pipe? It's plastic and kind of cheap looking from the factory.

Since this was a track session, let it stand as a reminder of what can happen when you take a DD to a track.

Hope this was his second car.

FYI... Downpipes are connected directly to the turbo exhaust (Hot Side) and are never made out of plastic. Are you referring to the intercooler/charge pipes?

Could bad lines thru The corners have caused this ?

Hopefully The insides of the engine is OK and it was something like a transmission or something relatively minor. But I doubt it.

And somebody pointed out never race with your daily. Then I would point out is never run maximum boost during a track session. The only time you leave the boost cranked is on the street or at the dragstrip but not on the open track for 20 mins at a time. That's not a good idea.

Good luck

I think its more like "what can happen when you take a modded engine car to a track"

I've tracked all of my daily drivers (non bmws, non m bmws, and my current m3) and its hasn't been an issue

Sorry to hear about your issues OP, good luck with the $

Did you find the root cause

And we go back to the... if tunes/powertrain mods were so easy.... BMW would have done it already.

Has anyone had a stock car experience an engine failure like this on the track?

I would delete this post and honestly have this entire thread deleted.

If your gonna want warranty work done, you need to remove everything before you take it to BMW and the last thing you need is to have them find out its modded by coming on here.

But the car is out of warren try tho. Or is it the life time warranty you are talking about

Lets wait until we hear back on the diagnosis before we start making assumptions

The engine could still be OK for all we know

Sorry, yes, meant the charge pipe.

On the F30, if you're going to mod the engine at all by increasing boost, that's the first upgrade under the hood.

Was more thinking of the cost to quality of life. If this was his DD, he's now walking.

Even without mods, running your car off track is very easy, I see it often.

You're right to not take a modded turbo engine to the track. Only track upgrades for most people should be tires and suspension parts maybe depending on stock set up.

Actual racing is an entirely different subject that we shouldn't explore here.

Maybe OP will get an E36 or E46 M3 that can be turned into a track beater while his DD is getting repaired

(I'm actually thinking of getting one of those, or a miata)
