No dipstick, you can however check the oil level via iDrive.

The 335d E90 has a dipstick, so there is a small chance the F30 d has one

i think older people don't like it because they can't see or touch it. just like how my parents prefer physical bills to come in the mail, all mine are online because i don't need to see or touch it.

I want a dipstick back, I have a mechanical Swiss watch, my wife doesn't have fake boobies, I still have a manual tranny, and I want a real mechanical limited slip differential(please BMW!) on my rear wheel driven car , I like beer and not some chemical Breezer Vodka stuff. edit: And Tiesto and Armin van Buuren is not my kind of music either. Give me Hendrix, Clapton, The Who etc anytime. * going back to race Gran Turismo 5 with my kid LOL* Cheers Robin |

If you dig around on E90post there are PLENTY of people having issues with the e-dipstick. Inconsistent readings, complete failures, "stuck" levels, etc. If they were stone-cold reliable that's one thing, but come-on, this is BMW.

I understand there have been some malfunctions, just as a dipstick can be stuck, broken, lost, etc. More interesting would be cases of damage done from not having a dipstick, which I haven't seen. From the mfr's point of view, I'm sure it's much more likely that a dipstick would be misused or unused, leading to engine damage. And the electronic version, when it's working, continuously monitors oil level. It doesn't have to wait for someone to touch it.

If you lose dipsticks I cannot envision the problems you must have with socks.

There was one E90 guy who got suspicious when his e-oil level always was reading max. He took it to the dealer, they drained the oil and refilled to the min level and it still read max. Sensor was dead. So in this case he could have burned enough oil to get far below the min level and never have known. Well until the oil pressure light came on - a state I'd like to avoid. A simple dipstick would have confirmed the issue. And I bet he's a 1 out of 1000 case where someone would be observant enough to notice the problem. Combine that with burning 1 quart per 1,500 miles to be "normal" per BMW and you can see where the problem comes in. http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=421877 Last edited by CirrusSR22; 07-18-2012 at 06:36 PM.. |

Given that sensor failure is not an uncommon occurrence in cars these days, I'd want to think that BMW has some safeguards for critical things like oil sensors?
