Lightbulb Geneva 2013: BMW 3 Series GT (Gran Turismo) World Debut

BIMMERPOST NEWS
Geneva 2013: BMW 3 Series GT (Gran Turismo) World Debut
88
COMMENTS

Making its world debut at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show is the BMW 3 Series GT (Gran Turismo) [Official Thread], the newest variant to the F3x 3 Series model line. The 3 Series GT rounds out the current generation 3 Series lineup, with the next model spawning off the same platform to be the 4 Series Coupe (F32)

While the 3 Series GT improves upon the 5 Series GT's very unwieldy back end, we feel that the rear design could still have been sleeker and sportier. But, if that were the case, perhaps it would then infringe on (or overlap with) the upcoming 4 Series Gran Coupe's space. While the 3 Series GT's back end design could be prettier, the front fascia styling is attractive and adds some flare on top of the F30 sedan and F31's more basic look.

On display was an M Sport Package and a Modern Line 3 Series GT. Subjective opinions on styling aside, one thing was clear from our time spent at the display - hordes of the automotive press were interested in seeing the car's utility. We witnessed (and you can see in the photos) groups from other manufacturers piling into the GTs to test out their improved legroom, headroom, and cargo space.

Lose the little fender "7's" and the M Sport is actually a pretty nice looking car!

I would like this car a lot more if it was literally a 3 series with a different body and longer wheelbase. But since they softened up the suspension, it just looses all appeal to me.

Looks good. Better than the F30.

The boomerang has to go. Moreso the "///M" fender badge!

Can someone explain the point of a 2 door GT, ie 4 series GT? I thought the point of GT was a 4-door coupe? It's already a coupe and seems like a huge waste of effort for the perceived market. Doesn't 2 door coupe sound redundant? For that matter, can someone explain the point of any GT sedan/coupe? They are hideous. I've seen 1 5 series in the last year.

It's not terrible, side view reminds me of the panamera. Not my cup of tea though...

I'd rather see the n55 in the wagon than this!

I'm sorry. That side vent looks like

And placing the mini ///M above it

And last but not least, there's that back end

At least it a pleasant color...

Huh..? Maybe it's just because I'm tired, but I didn't understand that at all!..

- BMW's GT's (Gran Turismos) are not four door coupes - They are 5 door hatch-backs. There is a 3GT and a 5GT.
- BMW's four door Coupes are "GC's" (Gran Coupes).

-The GT's are more practical than a Saloon/Sedan, but perhaps less stylish. -The four door coupes are less practical than a Saloon/Sedan, but more stylish. There is a 6GC, and soon a 4GC.

As for why, some people in some markets aren't content with the conventional offerings for car makers, and as the car makers serve up more wierd and wonderful offerings, people buy them, and car makers push the boundaries further.

The problem is where does the 3 series wagon fits in all this?
It's much better than 3GT in utility and looks better too.

Stepped away for a few days to refresh, now I'm back to give it another look. Sorry BMW, it does not work!

The tourer offers no extra benefit over the saloon when considering occupants, the GT does, it offers much more room. It also has a similar/better load lugging capacity as the tourer, just in less of a box shape. The tourer doesn't really have much, if any, utility that the GT doesn't.

As for the looks, obviously they're polarising.. but I know plenty of people that think all tourers look like Hearses.

I didn't even notice that at first.

That is one of the stupidest M-marketing placements I have seen recently. Pathetic.

The only attractive angle would be if you laid in the road and watched it roll over you. Aside from that, a breathtakingly ugly car. Maybe if you bought it, chopped off the roof from the post back, and made it a BMW El Camino...wait...Eureka!

The stupid 7 shaped thing.

The M placement.

The back end in general.

I don't like this car at all...

If they removed the Kardashian sized tail and made it similar to the A7 it'd be a pretty nice looking car. The ass end is to high and large for my taste.

Better than I thought it would be. Looks good compared to the 5gt scale wise but still too soft for me...especially in the back end. I would lose the black 7 boomerang thingy...what purpose does it serve? Overall it will probably sell better than the 5gt. If it doesn't...expect the return of the touring.

Still can't justify that interior, and that BMW has the balls to SOFTEN the suspension on this 3 series when they know they're pretty much at Lexus status now.
