I do wonder why BMW has completely stopped talking about the X4, though. It seems like there will be a ton of overlap between that car and this one. Especially now that I see it.
There will be much talking about the X4 soon...

Don't know if I like it or if it makes me want to vomit. Definitely better than the 5GT, which really did make me want to vomit. One thing is for sure, I would not buy one when they first go on sale incase sales tank like the 5GT did in the UK and you could get 25% discounts within a few months.

I wonder about the rear seat headroom though. It looks pretty low. Maybe too low for adults to sit in the back seat and still have enough headroom......?

With the 3GT in general...

The hatch in the GT offers a larger aperture than the hatch in the touring, and the boot/trunk capacity is higher than the touring. The rear shelf is both split and removable. The rear seat backrests are tilt adjustable also.

Also, the rear seats offer an additional 70mm of legroom compared to the tourer, and the cabin is more spacious in virtually every way. Even rear headroom is increased despite the swooping roofline (more so over the saloon, but only 1mm over the tourer).

In short it offers more passenger space than any other 3 series. The Gran Coupe is going to be the cramped one.

Oh that is good news if the rear headroom is OK. I was thinking of the 6GC a while back.... until I sat in the back seat. No headroom. Bzzzt. Plus 4-seats only in the 6GT was another show stopper. Even Audi worked out sometimes you want to put 5 people in a car with the Audi A7.

By the time I'm looking for a new car, the 5-LCI and 3GT should both me out and I can pick something. Or an Audi.....

I think the consensus is that this is what had been expected as the X4.

Negative, X4 will be to the X3 what the X6 is to the X5.

3GT is to the X4 what the 5GT is to the X6...

I agree why make GTs they look ugly. Just my opinion I would prefer wagon forms over these in either 3 or 5 series but the GTs make no sense. Curious to know what person buys these cars and why?

It has a higher ride height and has been tuned more towards the side of comfort. This is just what BMW said in their press release so I have no idea how it will compare to the sedan with the M-Sport package. That being said if I had to guess I would still put the GT a good bit behind the sedan in terms of sportiness.

Hopefully they're still able to get a decently sporty ride from it.

If your lifestyle outgrows your teenage coupe or career sedan, your choices are crossover SUV or touring. Lotsa 3er people hanging out on the X3 forum with a spouse and dogs/.5-2 kids. If you've done all that and had your fill of SUVs and you want something smaller but still serve a sport activity lifestyle and occasional added cargo (grandkids, golf clubs for 4, etc) your choices are touring or crossover SUV.

If you like a station wagon look, you get a touring. Sounds like you.

If you need a high entry/commanding view and high exit, you get a crossover SUV. A touring just won't do. It's not an option. With the GT, there's another option that has the high entry/exit and ride but equipped like a sedan and more room for adult sized passengers instead of dogs/kids of your youth.

It's no surprise the X6 and GT are being produced. One segment of buyers grew up in the back of station wagons and have a visceral negative reaction to them so an alternative is needed. Not coincidently, the higher entry exit is also needed. If you are tired of hauling around the big box shaped empty space in the back of a crossover SUV with it's limited rear seat comfort, what are your choices that don't have a low entry like the touring and bazillion sedans? The 3GT, 5GT and X6. Which is less than $50K?

p.s. 3GT buyers are probably parents of touring lovers who maybe have the visceral negative reaction to minivans and SUVs. This effect jumps generations. Having grown up in the back of your touring, your kids are future minivan, SUV and GT buyers.

Interesting....How would you describe the differences between the X6 and 5GT. Can you provide any links to information about the X4 that indicates it's something different than the 3GT?

They are very similar, but the X cars have a higher ride height, and the 3GT interior is from the F30 platform while the X4 interior will be based on the X3 (which is nowhere near as nice as the F30 IMO). The X4/6 are coupe versions of an SUV and the GT cars are SUV versions of a sedan. BMW is making too many damn models, though, that's for sure. I don't think all the models are necessary to gain market share. The same buyer will potentially cross shop X1, 3GT, 3 Touring, X3 and X4 whereas 2-3 of those models would have been enough to compete in the marketplace.

The 3 Tourer is available for 2 solid years in europe now. One must wonder why sending a car with the same engine and the same front is so complex. That must be related to the fact that some resources have been diverted to the GT for US markets.

Describing how it looks, there may not be that many differences... but in terms of what it actually does...

5GT vs. X6

5GT has greater head-room, front AND rear
X6 has greater cabin width in both front AND rear seats
5GT has greater luggage capacity with and without the rear seats folded.
5GT incurs >10% less personal BIK tax, and lower CO2, meaning less tax - this may be a european thing, since we also get the 520GT over here.
Driver seating position is about 15" higer in X6
X6 ride height is about 3.5" higher than 5GT
X6 front and rear overhangs means it can climb steeper gradients.
X6 is 4WD only, 5GT also offers RWD.

All this info is on BMW's website.

So, one would assume, the X4 will be less spacious than the 3GT, ride higher, be more expensive to own, and be a little better off road or in adverse weather.

Really not at all bad looking. Much better design than the 5GT. Very proportional.
The side vent must go, though.

Nice to know that the side vent actually has a function other than screw the car lines.
