I drove both models one right after another and the difference and choice was easy for me to hear, feel and see

I love the n20 power and feel but I can't stand the noise of the engine at idle in my garage and lack of exhaust note. It just sounds anemic when pushing it. Like it doesn't feel like a four banger when ur driving it but the sound it makes is a dead giveaway, to me at least

Most 335i's are made in South Africa and you don't want that.

The 328i is a delicious hot fudge sundae.

Put too much extra hot fudge, ruins the whole thing.

That is true. Luckily, the order I snagged is coming from Germany.

From what I have read (ref. E90fleet, etc.) the quality of cars produced by BMW in SA is equal to if not better than those made in Germany. The biggest downside to SA production destined for the USA is the longer shipping times.

In any event, your statement does not pertain to 335 production for Canada: they are all made in Germany.

to most people in the street, Both are the exactly the same car, expensive cars for shallow people...
if you really dont care about the tiny differences, get the 328i

but for those, like myself, who have some sort of a lack of confidence and/or need some ego stroked, and/or need to compensate for something else...

we get the 335i.

I just wanted another inline 6 cylinder engine, it's my sixth inline 6 BMW.
Nowadays an I6 is somewhat an USP. I love the sound.

I know modern 4 cylinder engines are good and fast but that doesn't mean (more than) 6 cylinder engines have no right to exist. It's the choice by the heart and I'm a car/driving enthusiast. So why not? That's the question. Why not?

If you want better MPG go with the 316/320d/i/328i/330d etc.

If you want a car with a bit of soul. 335i. Or the oncoming M340 whatever and M3 etc.

Cheers
Robin

I don't know why I even bother responding to this, hopefully for the benefit of the OP, because there is no hope for some people.

A base 335i is a better car than a base 328i because it offers more options and a bigger engine. HOWEVER, a base 335i is not a better car than a loaded up 328i...it is only a faster car. If you prioritize options and creature comforts over speed or sound, then why would you buy a base 335i instead? Its silly logic and you obviously don't understand BMWs pricing scheme. The 335i is a technically just a performance upgrade (and a status symbol to some elitists on here). With the exception of some markets, it does not offer anything more than a 328i has other than straight line performance. The only way your logic would make sense would be if a base 335i offered everything that a loaded 328i offered. BMW purposely prices the 335i where it will tempt those that want the best performance, it is obviously never a no-brainer though or the 335i would outsell the 328i, but that is clearly not the case. Additionally, if you look historically at resale values, the 335i does not do any better, so again is not a better car.

To answer the OPs question, yes the difference between the 335i and 328i is technically just the engine components. Either way both are great cars, just depends on your budget and what you value more with that budget.

Why not? BMW have been making various models in SA since the early 1970s. All of my 4 BMW cars (E36, E46, E90 & F30) have come out of SA and each one was made perfectly. No worries.

Four 3 Series in 30 years and you've never driven a German car.

I'm so sorry.

So a real BMW driver has to have the top model?? That's a first. A real BMW driver is someone who appreciates driving experience these cars offer and the technology behind it.... There are some who are more serious about it than others that does not mean you can dismiss these people as not "real" BMW drivers. People need to stop being so damn arrogant just because they have an M3 or a 335... Plenty of 328 owners can buy those models if they wanted to....

One huge difference between 328's and 335's is that it hard to find a dealer with a 335i to your specs in inventory.

I think many Americans are unwilling to order and wait. They want the car now. These are overwhelmingly 328i buyers. I don't know this for sure, it is only my opinion, but I'm guessing if you are a casual BMW buyer, you're interested in the brand, ant not necessary into BMW's for the performance, i.e. a typical female, you'll buy a 328i off dealer inventory. Hence the average dealer F30 inventory (again my opinion) is 90%+ 328's. This the BMW marketing plan.

I'm guessing, again, 335i buyers are more patient and more likely to order, get exactly what they want, and wait. And then there are those idiots you'll ED a 335i and not get their cars for what seems to be an eternity.

You're a funny guy.. please refrain from commenting about stuff if you do not have any understanding on the subject matter. No one is interested in your one sided perspective of how the world works.

You do know that specific countries provide the supply for particular models for a group of countries ya?

you are absolutely right, a loaded 335i is a better car than a loaded 328i because of the extra power. no argument on that.

Lol. I guess im not an enthusiast for having a 335i. And i must be a lady because I bought mine off the lot. The only 335i's in the whole LA area when I was shopping around were all fully loaded - my thoughts have always been why pay $60k for a 335 when I could get a 335is a 1m coupe or an m3 for a little more and the fact that my motor was blown on the evo and needed one right away I took the 328i.

Its not the best car - of course I want moar power but ive seen guys lap 335/m3 owners in the older model 328s.

So NO a 335i does NOT make you faster. Haha i love it when i catch up on guys with a weaker car in the turns. Keep pushing them and make them spin out or let you pass.

But they do sound nice.

Although sometimes I think shit I should have gotten the 335i. Oh well. I try to make up for it by absolutely mashing it through corners and by taking it to the canyons on weekends signing up for track events. It seems to be working. Only sad part is 31 more months till I head over to the 1addicts forum. =(
