everyone is fine and I believe the girl received a ticket or citation for failing to stop at a red light.

I didn't know about the starting the car after a wreck, it was stuck in the middle of traffic so I was trying to just drive it out of the way so that it wouldn't be as much of a hazard for the emergency crews.

That said, I hope for my sake they write the car off as I don't think it'll ever drive the same again regardless of how good of a body shop I take it to. Thank you all for the warm wishes.

Hopefully they total it out. If the frame is bent they should. Hard to tell how deep the damage is.

It all depends on adjuster and the repair shops.

I had 35k damage done on a 50k Infinity M37 (within 6 months of purchase). Frame damage included. Insurance wouldn't budge on totaling the car and it was fixed. This made it easy for me to stick it to them when I sued them for pain and suffering (suffered a minor injuries).

1. Is your car a lease? If so, just look forward to when you have to return it. My infinity was leased and infinity did not want to step in and help total the car. I guess they weren't concerned about getting back a car with 35k worth of repairs

2. Are you injured? If the insurance company is going to screw you, screw them back. Demand for a 3-4x multiplier on your injuries..should help cover your losses if you trade or sell the car with this kind of accident on file. I had a deep bone bruise on my ankle from my accident (3k worth of medical bills) and I got the other person's insurance to multiply by 3 and we called it a day. All in all, the other insurance company was just happy i was not lawyer'ing up and they were pretty easy to deal with (however, if your injuries are major, seek professional counsel)

Damn dude sorry to see this happened, some people just shouldn't be driving, glad your ok but not surprised by it. Its hard to tell based on pics if the car will be totaled because its hard to estimate how much the repairs would cost. Hopefully it is because no one wants to drive a car that suffered that much damage. Good luck with the whole process, hope everything goes well.

1st - you walked away, the rest doesn't matter.

2nd - if the crank isn't bent its likely not totaled. (I had $22K damage from a similar wreck in a 4mo old E55 & they put it back together rather than totaling it despite my rather insistent protests)

3rd - wanna sell your wheels?

If you want it to be totaled, starting the engine may have been the best thing you could've done

A new crate N55 can cost upwards of $14k, not sure about a body shop's rate.

Start adding this up and it adds up fast. Electronics are killer. If you had hud, your windshield is over $2k. I'd say it's totaled... especially once you get into the interior, a lot of the dash looks like it needs replacing, airbags are a fair chunk. I'd say this is a loss. Sounds stupid, but go get a full physical asap in case you need to get pain and suffering or ongoing medical costs.

My Deer vs e9x cost 10,000k and wasn't any where near this amount of damage. Certified BMW repair shops give higher estimates because they spend the time and care required to put the car back together ($5,000 of the 10 was paint work!). If you haven't already, make sure the body shop you take the car to is a BMW Certified one. They will fight with the girl's insurance company adjustor. The last thing you want is to get stuck with some low baller repair shop that will do a less than BMW standard job and quote as such.

Been there done that, reach out if you need anything.

Glad you are ok!

Hey guys, thank you all for the input.. I just filed my claim with my insurance today and they said it won't likely be written off or totaled due to the age of the car and it's value..

That said, I just got home from the body shop and took a couple more pics of the damage in day light. From what I can tell it looks as if the subframe is bent, not sure how that can be repaired, and it looks like the radiator/intercooler had been pushed into the engine compartment. Couldn't get the hood up but looking at the engine cover it seems fine so I'm not sure the full extent of the damage.. judging by the sub-frame I think it's a write off..

Oh and one last thing I got back from the doc and all is well, just a couple of aches and sores but they should subside in the next couple days!

Just because the frame rails are bent don't assume it's totalled. They can easily be replaced along with the rest of the unibody structure in the front clip. It's really not that unusual or dramatic of a wreck. It's all about the labor and materials needed to repair it and what percentage the repair cost is of the current value.

I do auto collision estimating, if you provide me with the year and options on the car I can give you an answer to whether its totaled or not.

Looks like a write off to me. Usually, the damage needs to be 75% of the value of the car.

OP... glad no humans were totalled (or damaged) during the accident This looks like a totalled car. If not, since it is such a new car you should insist on OE replacement parts. Also if insurance does not total the car, is there a law in Canada where you can claim from diminished value (due to major accident history)?
btw... at what speed did the collision happen? Its amazing that these cars can handle such impacts at high speeds.

I will definitely be taking it to a certified BMW repair shop (if they deem it repairable) and I think they will be using OE parts as a requirement.

And yes, there is a diminished value law that you can claim, I'm hoping it doesn't resort to that and they just write me a check for the full value of the car and call it that.. but this will probably not be happening.. only wishful thinking haha..

regarding the speed, I was going 50-60km/h at the time of impact. Not sure what speed the other party was doing but it definitely wasn't slow and IMO her car was definitely travelling faster than it should have been on that street, my guess is 60-70km/h

What's the damage to the interior like? Is the dash messed up at all? Electronics = big bucks. If you can find any damage to the interior "caused by the accident," make sure it's noted. Be picky on panel gaps. Headlights and parts are $3k. Airbags are $1300 at least. $2k windshield. Full front clip unpainted should be $2k+. Make sure the appraiser adds on the roof and through the rear doors to blend the paint... it'll all add up hopefully. It'll never drive the same - mark my words.

artieg30 heres my verdict:
taking into consideration the model year and options on your car (calculated with 7500 miles on the odometer) I came up to a current value for your car of $47,000 and I do not believe it will be a total because the total damage needs to be near $36k. I believe it will be about $25k in repairs taking into account labor rates. Keep in mind I used general repair hourly rates which may differ from that of the body shop you will use for the repairs. Now here in California state law requires that a car which requires repairs greater than 75% of its current value be written off ,and I do not believe it will be the case for you. Now looking at those pictures does not tell the whole story because the car has to be taken apart to look for damages on the inside and if the engine needs replacing and major suspension components need replacing, which is hard to tell without taking the car apart a total loss may be possible. But from the looks of I do not believe there is enough damage to write it off as bad as the car looks in those pictures.

It will roughly take 20 days to fix the car.

Seems like you are from Canada, I used rates in America and the value of the car based on American rates.

I just read that the OP started the engine! Well if it was not totalled first time around, it almost definitely is now!
Best of luck in getting a new repalcement.

BTW, just read about Paul Walker's death. What a tragedy.
