2013 F30 335 TOTALED - worst day. Should I get an X5?

Parked my car in parking lot. To my horror, flash flood covers car over taillights (this picture was taken as water was subsiding!).

I love my 335i xdrive, but I'm thinking at 6'1, 200+ pounds it might be too small.. and there's the whole inclement weather thing.. also storage space might be more practical.

Would you get a new 335 in a new color because it's incredible to drive or go with more practical X5? But X5 is also more expensive.. And I know I'm speaking to a biased audience..

I have both. My x5 is an E70 though. I would pick an X5 over a 5 series though. In terms of luxury the X5 has that in spades. Until the X7 comes along the X5 is to me a cheap way of getting a 7 series. Depending on how deep your pockets are you can really go nuts with the options to the level of the 7 series at an entry point of 55k vs 90 for the 7. The interior quality, especially in the F15s is one of the best in the business. You can now get B&O on the F15s. Personally if you have to choose between the two I would wait for the X6. I find the F15s side profile to be a bit long for my liking.

I won't comment on the driving experience as it's obvious this is where the F30 surpasses the F15. However when I am in my E70 I don't miss the speed of the F30. For me there is far more to offer at the x5 level than the F30. I personally would not get the V8 as I don't believe in being that fast in an SUV. However these SUVs can handle like sporty cars and you will still have fun with them. The chassis can still handle the forces generated by the v8.

I have often asked myself the question, if I had to choose which would I pick between the X5 and the F30. I vote for the X5 (X6 being more preferable)

Good luck

Ever consider an X3? I am 6'0 and I love it because it is not too big like the X5 but not too small like the X1.

I'm 6'5" and about 225. The F30 has plenty of leg room for me. The X5, on the other hand, does not.

I'm sorry about your car and happy new car shopping.

I just turned in my 2011 X3 for my 435 and I have driven the new X5's on an autocross type course sponsored by BMW and I loved that vehicle. They were the xDrive35i's and they were very nice. The interior is excellent and much better than my 435. BTW, I'm 6' and 205lbs and found the X3, X5 and 435 all big enough for me.

What a bummer! Curious to know how this is handled through insurance assuming you financed with gap insurance, it's a no brainer, but what if you owned outright, how would they value?

Wow! That sucks. I'm definitely biased. I'm a car guy. I would definitely get another 3er or 4GC. I'm also 5'8", 158 lbs. I just drove the new X5 at the BMW UDE and it's very nice and capable and certainly preferable as SUVs go, but it confirmed for me I'm not an SUV guy. If I was getting an SUV today it would most likely be an X1.

I would also look into the 4GC.

X1 is more of a compact hatchback than it is an SUV.

Wow, sorry to see what happened to your car! As for a new car... Don't forget that the x5 is not only more expensive Msrp wise, but also gas wise & insurance and driving won't be as much fun. I'm 6,1 and fit just fine in my 3. If you really need the extra room/ height then maybe you should get the x5

3GT might be the perfect fit here ... if you're OK with its shape.

Drive a few different cars and get that one that gives you more of that "special feeling." Bummer about the 335 though, what a PIA to deal with. At least it is not your house, that would really suck.

Thanks for the kind words and advice guys. The situation completely sucks, especially since this is my primary car right now and now I have to share my wife's 328 xdrive for the time being. The only thing I'm thankful is that as other posters pointed out - it wasn't my home and I didn't own the car (and I have GAP insurance!).

I was deadset on getting an X5 until I went to my BMW dealer today and my sales advisor that I've been dealing with me forever showed me the August lease numbers:

2015 X5 - All Models (35i, 35d, 50i)
Money Factor: 0.00130
Residual for 36 months:
15k: 54%
12k: 56%
10k: 57%

No improvement. No loyalty. No special credits.

Awful, awful deal! So I decided to stick with 335, I was mostly being dramatic about the size and I LOVED my car.

Since it's going to cost me at least $4500-$5500 with taxes, title fees, etc. not to mention insurance deductible and premium increase, plus dealing with assorted fees from tow company, etc. I'm going to do something different with the car.. maybe an M Sport package or different color.

I wouldn't use an unusual act of god for a reason to get a differently sized car, I'd get one because you want it. As others mentioned, size moving up to an SUV can be very misleading. Sit in it first. My best friend is 6'8" and it wasn't an x5 that he fit best in, believe it or not he fit better in an X3, Lexus RX and 5 series (and best in a Jeep, which is what he ended up with).

Get a SUV if you need it. But it doesn't sound like you'd be getting one for the right reasons

The pricing issue is a problem if you are in the market for an X5. I even know someone who was shopping for an ML but the lack of flexibility in pricing has caused him to pause a bit. The wealthy guys from the emerging markets are buying these cars for cash and production is being funneled through where the profits are. Unfortunately that means limited production here, fewer cars on the lot and dealers being able to sell to the one who is prepared to buy close to MSRP.

Completely agree and the logic on pricing makes sense.

I love the X5, and this is my 4th BMW, but for close to MSRP I would also check out the Range Rover Sport and maybe Mercedes ML.
