If fuel costs didn't matter...

An odd parallel world I admit but imagine fuel costs didn't matter. Which would you go for? 330d or 335i?

Personally, petrol every time. Diesels have come a long way but they still will never be able to manage the smoothness or sound of a silky straight six.

I do a lot of miles, and filling up every 300 miles bacomes a serious PITA, so diesel is still a good choice for me

330d for me. I could have bought a 335i when I got mine but would always stick with the 330d even though I did 8K miles last year.
I much prefer the diesel shove in your back when you boot it.
Its interesting the amount of people who move from a fast diesel to a fast petrol say they miss the shove of a diesel.

I'd still be considering mileage on the engine as a key part of my decision. Low annual mileage the petrol would win, simply as I don't see the diesel being the best engine (long term) for short trips and low mileage use.

But if driving more miles and particularly if in lots of traffic, where I'd be continuously working the engine and gearbox, I'd have the diesel.

I've been an advocate of riding the "torque wave" of a diesel for years, long before most would even dare look at a diesel car. To be honest, for my current driving, I'm not missing the diesel 'shove' at all. But I'm sure I would miss it, if driving every day in traffic.

So for me it isn't a fuel cost issue.

It would have to be the 8AT 335i as I think it gives almost as much shove but goes to 7k. Ooo that noise

But I love the 330d, the ease of pushing on and the range it can achieve.

So may say both (one for wifey) and drive them both!
we almost have that now with a MSport 5 series touring !

I cannot stand going to re-fuelling stations, so that's why I've now switched to Diesel.

This BMW will be my very first BMW, my very first Diesel car, my very first auto and my very first car with ASS.

That is something I'm not missing with going back to petrol.

Plastic gloves... the drips of diesel from the ledge around the diesel nozzle that nearly always goes onto the car filler area, or on the paintwork... and you can't prevent it unless you have paper towels. The mess.... the smell... the looking for gloves.... get a bit on you or the feet and it stinks forever.

Fill with care.

PS: Keep a couple of spare plastic gloves in the car, or you'll regret not doing so when you get caught out.

I had a new M5 to try just didn't do it for me but sounded great!

Diesel smell has never bothered me and never used gloves either. Torque makes up for it.

My first petrol for 9 years (328i) and I have to say I am not missing the diesel one bit. I am fortunate to have a fuel card that allows me to use as much fuel as I like as long as it's below a certain CO2 level ( weird I know!) Anyway given fuel is not an issue then defo Petrol for refinement and more pleasant 'filling' experience but Diesel for duration between fills, particularly when wet and cold.

So if I had the cash 335 for me !

Yeap, have those spare gloves in our 5er, as the smell does stay on your hand for ages!

Slight tangent but picked up a loan car today 125i Msport. If I had any doubt re: petrol vs diesel, the refinement and decent economy swings me towards unleaded. Can't wait for the near silent cold starts in the winter. Also, why does nothing handle like a hire car :-) !?

I think the 125i is a very compelling package!

I borrowed a 125i for the weekend great little car a touch too small for me, otherwise I'd have had the M135i.
