Trust me that is lenient. One of our lease companies insisted on 1.6mm on the lowest tyre, they would then authorise two tyres provided the other was below 1.8mm. You literally had to visit the tyre shop every day for them to check once you got down to the legal limit.

It's as safe as using a used condom!

I know, I usually change tyres around 3mm, below that and they get squirmy in the wet. At 1.6mm they are lethal.

What gets me is that you walk along any road in these parts and look at the tyre tread on parked cars and you'll see several that look like they're on or near the limit. On wet motorways etc., these people are all around you

This is really sad!
I had a short walk to the shops just before it went dark and looked at a few wheels and tyres. Nearly all the cars had kerbed wheels (nearly: because mine are not!!!) and the tread depth was worringly low. People don't realise how important properly inflated tyres with good tread depth are for their safety.

Yep and us humans get mad when speed cameras, speed limits, etc are imposed, because we think we are all responsible individuals....the above proves we need nannying

Ten minutes in a quiet car park would sort that out, no?

I said that to the tyre fitting company in jest. He said that they were ordered not to dispose of the tyres until given permission to. And the lease company did come and pick the old tyres up occasionally. If they spotted wheelspin marks or more tread than allowed, the tyre dealer would lose his approved tyre dealer status for not telling.

I said he must have more worn tyres to show instead, but wouldn't budge. He was an independant and was his own place, so fair enough.

The 3D and latest 4D appear to be the more balanced tyre for our typical UK winters. From what I read the M3 has a slightly more severe winter bias, but still a HP winter tyre and for the top end of the market.

Thought I was the only one who did that, supermarket car parks often show the worst of tyres. And what I've noted, many higher performance cars have the lowest tread depths. Seems the higher the cost of tyres, the more folks go to the limits. Certainly see it up here, now that is scary.

Well put the Winters on the 5er this morning.

After a day out, coming home it's now 4c and I pull onto a damp road and give the accelerator a good push...no wheel spin or DSC light. Pretty sure the summers in these conditions would have twitched.

John, are the Dunlops run flats too? Or have you had to get the "mobility kit" or whatever?
