2014 n26 sounds better
I dropped my 2012 n20 equipped car off for service this morning. They gave me a 2014 n26 equipped 328i no line as a loaner. Also in my garage at home is a 2013 n26 328i no line.
so I'm getting on the freewayand the loaner car sounds SO different. And SO much better! I kept double checking that it was a 328i. There is a different part number for both the down pipe and center section of the exhaust system from 2013 to 2014. No doubt that explain the difference. Now I'm really jealous. This new system sounds great. |

Had a '14 328 loaner a few weeks back, didn't sound any different.
Have a '14 320 loaner today, but that does not compare as exhaust is completely different than the 328.

Haha, I have a 328i loaner too! New FEM module going in... hopefully that'll fix my IHKA issues.
Anyway, after putting the //More Performance exhaust can on my car I think all the stock cars sound um... quiet. |

I have a 2014 and the exhaust always sounded fine to me, could not understand why so many complained about the 4cyl exhaust note. It sounds different in sport generally than comfort, but sport mode sounds fairly aggressive and good for a four cylinder.
Never heard a 2012 for comparison, and frankly don't remember what the 2013 I test drove sounded like. |

There are a variety of reasons new PNs are issued.

Do the new engines sound better or just the exhaust note? The engine has a ticking / rough feel & sound. To that, will adding an aftermarket exhaust or updated version change that? I don't think so - just add more sound to drown it out (similar to white noise to quite outdoor noise).

Does it sound different, or just sound louder? or both?
With my 2013 328i, pleasure to my ears happens only when I floor it at rpm higher than 4k, which is always a short moment with this little jb4 tuned rabbit. Not valid for comparison, but a 2014 320i loaner felt a bit louder at lower rpm. |

Sorry to bump an old thread but I just test drove a 2014 428i expecting no difference to my 328i, and sure enough, the sound is way different. It almost sounds like an induction noise. As if the car had an aftermarket intake, or maybe sound piped through the speakers?
I'm positive it's not the new downpipe, because it sounded like the new noise was in addition to the exhaust note. |

Definitely a different sound. The second I got my service loaner yesterday and started driving off I noticed the difference. It has a more aggressive burble. Not from the exhaust but more like the intake. Strangely it sounded more like a simulated v8 burble sound than a turbo inline 4. It was very nice. Made me sad when I got my car back from service and that burble was gone.
