The other great thing is you will get new for old in the first year , not many will do that, Admiral/Elephant/ and the RED phone don't TMK.

Yes, finding it tricky finding someone to insure all the options and also the minor mods (grilles etc.) to be honest, will try some others today...

Garage List
SwiftCover (part of AXA) also do that auto-renewal thing.

That's handy cos car2cover offer a 12 month 'deferred start' on their GAP Insurance, so you could get the first year free with LV then automatically switch when it runs out.

The grills and Exhaust tips, do not need declaring Mark.

Thats what I do.
Also Car2Cover is transferable once to a new car.
I have done this also.

Any modifications that weren't fitted at the factory unfortunately do need to be declared; in the case of non-performance enhancing modifications, they can alter the look of the car (eg into a different line) and/or increase the desirability of the car, so you have to declare everything otherwise they'd unfortunately be well within their rights to void or reduce cover

I asked LV if these changes using BMW original parts altered the quote and they say NO.
These are "replacements like for like".
PS) I should mention BMW are supplying and fitting Black Tips and Grills and Performance mats to mine.

They might not change the quote, but you should still declare them. Anything that alters the appearance of the car or makes it potentially more desirable can obviously alter their risk; just better to be safe than sorry, they will get out of paying a claim at any opportunity! I've always declared any mods (no matter how small) on all my cars, there are stories online of people not declaring seemingly small things like this, and cover being voided because the car was made to look more desirable with eg the black grilles (so eg a higher risk of being stolen), or made to look like a different line (eg putting the black tips from the 'Sport' line on).

Obviously up to you mate but I've always figured it's better to be safe than sorry! If it was me and they did insist I didn't have to declare, I'd at least get that in writing from them; different insurers may differ on this, but this has been my experience over the years...

Come to think of it, I phoned LV for a quote yesterday myself; quote without the mods was £1100, quote with black grilles, black exhaust tips and black badges, rocketed to £1600!! You may have got someone that was confused and thought it was a factory-fitted option?

Best to get in writing anyway mate, let me know how you get on; if LV say I don't have to declare then I'll probably end up going with them anyway to be honest, may give them another call this morning...

Usually it's anything (even OEM stuff) that's fitted after it's left the factory that is classed as a "modification". Royal PITA, but better to be safe than sorry!

I've ended up going with Elephant again for renewal (just under a month away). I phoned them for a new quote yesterday as a new customer, and they said they wouldn't insure the 330d as it had "more than 6" factory-fitted options and/or modifications. So I tried other insurers (LV, whose quote went up by £600 when they were advised of the mods [crazy]), Direct Line were the best quote, but wouldn't cover the car with the mods as my girlfriend has only been driving for 4 years (less than the 5 they require), and your specialist mod places (Adrian Flux, Performance Direct) were ridiculous, over £2k compared with the £800-£1100 I've got elsewhere. Also tried another few e.g. Aviva, Swift etc. but they were at the top end of that.

So I've settled on Elephant as they've agreed to match a price I got on Compare the Market from Admiral (obviously sister company), who would cover all the mods and options, think it's because I'm a current customer.

They're absolutely crap, but hopefully won't need to use them, and at least I know everything is covered, and with a decent premium (£1050 for myself and my girlfriend, inc. protected NCB as I have 5 years). Still much better than the £1550 I was paying this year for the 135i, and the 123d before that was only £200 cheaper!

Apparently insurance for women is going up as of 20th December, due to the court ruling that insurers can't discriminate against males and charge lower premiums to females, so I've bought it today so I get the quoted price as it stands now.

Hate insurance, most don't know what they're doing (guy at elephant asked what a Xenon light was, as well as some other daft things that even people not involved in car insurance would know), but it's a necessary evil...

Take out Gap Mark with Car2cover, they are cheap and good, and will make up the difference in "new for old" should the worst happen.

Cheers John, this car is the first time I'm going to get it I think; always been aware of it before but risked it. Got a quote for £199 for 3 years from ala.co.uk which I thought was pretty good; going to see if BMW will match that at handover...

Mark worth checking the "amount payable" and /or "Back to invoice", I found Car2Cover gave the highest pay out for least money invested.

Maximum amount is £25k, back to invoice or paying finance settlement off, whichever is greater; I will get a quote from C2C as well, thanks!

I went to my dealer today to sign the paperwork and showed them the ALA quote (don't forget to use the ALA12 discount code) and the dealer said they couldn't get anywhere near that quote. Their cheapest would be double.

It was worth a try; are ALA a decent company? If so, are you going with them?

I've had 2 policies with them now and they have been fine to deal with and I've not read anything bad about them. They have also been around a long time. But... I've never had to claim so haven't put them to the real test.

Yes, I'll be using them again but did want to see what the dealer could do first.

Aaaarrrrgggghhhh!
I hate buying Insurance.

I've been trolling through the various comparison web sites and they've all given me different prices for LV, they being the most competitive and best IMO.

Even more bizarre is that the prices vary at different times of the day and on different days!

So far car@gocompare.com are the cheapest and have the least problems in digesting and retaining information.

moneysupermarket.com second cheapest but the LV site accessed through them cannot retain information of my profession even though it is on their list and so keeps giving different premiums, confused.com go for expensive Admiral and comparethemarket.com are too expensive and they can stuff their meercats where the sun does not shine.

Here at the other side of the Irish sea I'm having great fun online as well. My insurance expires 1st week of January and I will probably have to renew for the F10 520 but it's possible I could have the 330d within a couple of days.

Highlights so far are Allianz €501, 'BMW' (Zurich) €650 to an eye watering €1068 with Aviva
