Km's at service recorded different than actual

The wife had her car serviced for the first time today and was saying that they (BMW) plugged her key into some device and it registered that the km's on the car were 8800 but the actual km's on the car were 9100. When she queried why the difference they said that was the km's on her key and that's what they recorded on all paperwork and in iDrive as being the km's when it was serviced. What I don't get is I have done more than 300km's on "my key" so WTF? Why not record the actual km's?

Edit: Car was purchased new with only 20km on the clock when we got it.

My understanding is that all keys should sync with the real km of the car. So, you were bullshitted to, in my view - it's a fault of some kind. Either her key didn't sync properly, or it misread.

funnily enough though... I had a warranty call on my floor mats, and my sales guys came out to pick it up. he went off with my spare key after first starting the car with it, and the dealership came back with "not enough KM on the key" and had to take my actual key.

So not 100% sure how it all syncs.

Thinking about it, I lost a Key Fob not long after we got the car so maybe the missing km's are on that key. But surely the keys should still read what is actually on the car?

But here's a novel idea, why not use their eyes and actually read the km's from the car?
