This is going to sound very stupid but I just want to be sure

I’m going from the stock rims on my 328i to aftermarket rims. The aftermarket rims are wider than my current rims. Do I need to get new tires to match the width of the new rims or can I use my current tires?

More details needed. Current wheel and tire sizes, new wheel sizes?

The rims are 17x7.5.
Wouldn’t the tire be matched to the width size (7.5)?

I still haven’t decided on an aftermarket rim. I’m trying to figure out how tire and rim fitment works.

If my tire fits 17x7.5 can I put a 20x7.5 rim on it? What about a 18x8?

You need to do more research.

Wheel sizes are determined by diameter and width (other specs bring offset, lug pattern, and bore size).

Tire sizes are identified by width (in millimeters), sidewall (as a percentage of the width), and diameter (in inches).

You cannot fit a 17" tire on any rim that's not 17". Width is a limiting factor as well, but it's moot if the diameters are different.

I suggest going to tirerack.com or something and learn about it.

Ok so I have 225/50R17 tires.
This means the width is 225mm and the diameter is 17inches. I can only put a rim that has a width of 225mm and a diameter of 17inches on these tires.
Am i correct?

also, are most rims 225mm in width? I'm looking at rims and they only have the diameter in the specs, i don't see much of the width.

Rim widths are measured in inches. There is typically a small range of tire widths that will fit any particular rim. Again, Google is your friend.
