Well, are the 5 cylinder RS3 or TT RS available in Australia? If so they have been "blowing you off the lights" for quite some time. Those cars, along with the A45 and CLA45 have better acceleration than pretty much any 6 cylinder-powered car currently on the market aside from a 911, GTR, and a select few others.

Expect a new 6 cylinder engine from BMW with more power soon (B68), probably next year in conjunction with the 4 GC release if rumors hold up.

Thanks, now I'm depressed.

Hey Bimmer give me 400 hp, from the factory! and 500 Nm at 1500 rpm.

The only six cylinder BMW with 400hp or more will be an M3/M4 (or other 6 cylinder M-proper models, such an X4 M). Expect possibly up to 350hp from the new non-M I6, but not much more (at least not for this generation of cars).

They have the 1.8t on the base A4L, not the A6L. BMW was probably more expensive and did not sell as well until they got domestic manufacturing and long wheel base models to compete with Audi.

Now the 3er is on par with the A4, just like the 5er is with the A6 in term of prices.

The 4 will be a fringe car like all coupes because most chinese prefer larger cars. Only the young rich buy those.

Is it me or does it look like it needs a drop? That wheel gap catches my eye. Holding out for the M4.

does BMW time new engine programs to correspond to new model releases or are they independant? in other words, will the B68 appear as soon as it's ready for production(or at least in a new model close to that time) or is a new engine program considered to be such an important event that it would only appear first in a relatively substantial model such as a 4 series(as opposed to a "lowly" 2 series)?

No you're not. You nailed it, and that's a great analogy. I had been trying to put my finger on why the silhouette looked less like a BMW and more like something else. Definitely the A5 as pronounced by a that large area of sheet metal on the rear quarters and long wheelbase.

Maybe that is why I like it. I've always been a fan of the Audi styling but HAD to have the BMW power train. In the 4 I get both.

One that's almost completely wrapped in camouflage. Way to jump to conclusions in calling something ugly

It's fully visible in the uncamouflaged pics of the 4 coupe. I agree the base bumper looks terrible. I'm sure the M-Sport bumper will look great though.

As with any complex system, a big part of the work is the integration of its smaller components. Having the engine itself ready is only part of the story in getting it into consumers' hands. You have to get it working and tested with each model on an individual basis.

The engine may be long since complete (though maybe not) and integration work has likely begun some time ago on a variety of BMW models. The scheduling of everything is driven by the program managers and marketing department, and the timing and release strategy depends on all sorts of factors. BMW has debuted new engines in many of its different product lines over the years.

It is possible that many different models will get the new engines at the same time, or very near the same time. But rumors suggest that the engine will be announced in conjunction with the 4 GC next year. Assuming that happens, I fully expect the entire 3 and 4 product lineup to get it for MY 2015. Whether any of the 1/2, 5/6, Z*, X*, or 7 get it at that time is anyone's guess. I would say it is likely to find its way into some of those rather quickly. Maybe not the 1/2 right away, but you never know. There is the B48 too - maybe that will land in the smaller vehicles first. And then the B*7 diesels too.

You'll get the same things as you would if you moved from any other sedan to its coupe equivalent - style and exclusivity. Usually it will mean a higher MSRP yes, though there are a few exceptions.

thx! i guess nothing is as simple as it seems, lol. well, i'm hopeful then of seeing the B68 and/or B48 in the 2er by the time i'm ready to buy. i focused on the B68 in my question since it's release is more imminent, but considering your' info, the 2er could conceivably get the B48 before the B68. of course, what i really want is a Z1/Z2 with the B38(in maximum tune)!

Well, if you can get them down under.... 410hp and 600Nm from 3k (or 550 from 2.2k) is available from the Alpina B3 Saloon, I'm sure the Alpina 4-er will get the same engine.

coupe has always been a hard sell there.

A4 is successful partly because the long wheelbase version (it's really hard to find a non long-wheelbase version of audi), and partly because the image of the Audi brand is better than BMW there. ( many people think Audi/Mercedes are for successful businessman, BMWs are for playboys)

even BMW have long wheelbase 3 series there (yes...eg 318Li, 325Li...etc), even long wheelbase F30s.

People generally don't like coupes there...and it's very rare to find a roadster(z3/z4) even in the largest cities.
