f30 335i manual transmission superb

After owning our 2013 335 m sport for nearly 3 months now, I must say that this is the best manual shifter I have ever driven. I have driven manuals for over 25 years now and have owned several makes and must say this one is damn good. My e92 coupe is nice but the f30 is smoother with even more precise gear engagement. The shifts just want to glide into place with precision and ease. First to second is greatly improved over the previous generation. I am not sure what BMW did but it was correct. I still love my e92 and it's shifter is nice but the f30 is quite an improvement. I hope others here consider making the purchase of a manual f30 so BMW will continue to offer it here in the USA.

Anybody else have any opinions?

+1. amazing. very smooth, I would be so bold as it is better than an e46 M3. Getting a manual in the USA almost guarantees the need to order and wait for your car, its worth every bit of it.

The 8-speed sport auto is cool, but its just no the same experience to me. Wouldn’t trade the MT ever.

One cool thing, that I myself hope not to experience, is if you kill it accidentally it will restart on its own. (Bro-in law killed it backing into the driveway! ha)

The throws could be shorter, but otherwise it's very good, I agree.

This.

The clutch stop helped too. It's a little light on effort and feel. I give it a B-

Well like any manual car the butter smooth gear stick action will not last long and get more "notchy" over time. My wife's Honda was extremely smooth the first 3 months too...

What exactly are you referring to? Do you mean if you stall the car in 1st gear the car will restart itself once you go back to neutral?

My experience has been the opposite with the cars I have owned. Now Honda, I dont even want to get into that mess. Once I had a Civic Si, third gear pop out, syncros failing, need I say more. Honda manuals these days are too easy and go to hell in a short period of time. My e92 just keeps getting smoother after over 80,000 miles

He had the car in reverse and didn’t give it enough gas over the curb at the end of the drive way. he had the clutch pushed in about half way when it died, when he fully depressed the clutch it restarted. ASS was off too, and the car never came to a FULL stop.

+1 on the manual trans. Also the hill assist is a pretty cool feature I stumbled across.

Hill assist is a feature that prevents you from rolling backwards on a hill as you start your progress with a manual transmission. I temporarily applies the brakes automatically until you let out the clutch and begin forward progress. Many automakers now have this feature.

Apparently no one here has driven a S2000. That's how all stick shifts should be.

When was the last year Honda made the s2000? Honda's glory years are over for now until they get their head out of their wannabe Toyota rear ends. As far as performance and build quality their cars are garbage now, they make nothing to get the fun juices flowing anymore. They are boring with cheap interior parts that rattle horribly within 2000 miles of ownership. This used to not be the case. Their Civic Si transmission is the one now that reviewers speak well of but they have many problems that Honda refuses to acknowledge. Their horsepower numbers look pretty good on paper with the v6 accord until you drive it and wonder if perhaps they are little minature horses. It feels as though they must have huge drivetrain losses. Sorry for the rant but I am quite annoyed with Honda for now due to my dissapointment with my previous car from them and their absolutely boring product development. I suppose they make reliable people movers for 70 years old grandmas and soccer moms.

Really? Never drove a BMW stick before, but first to second on my MSport is quite long. Have to drop quite a lot of revs to shift smoothly I observed. Unless I'm doing something wrong...

It sounds like he stopped for few seconds and in Normal and Eco modes it shut down the engine.

it would not restart if it had been stalled

I imagine it's much easier to make a smooth-shifting manual transmission when it doesn't have to handle any torque.

It doesn't take a lack of torque to make the throws short. And when did smooth shifting became the only thing to make a good manual transmission?

Fun thread. I ordered a 6MT Msport AW. Coming in ~7 weeks. UGH. Everyone asks where my Range Rover went. Anyway, before the RR, I had a 540i Msport 6MT and loved it. I am hoping the F30 is close to the same (shoot, it's almost the same size as the old E39!).

Congrats on the new car you have ordered. I would be shocked if you are dissapointed in the 6MT.

Another reason why I can't wait to get out of my C350 Coupe. I love driving a manual transmission. Never complained. I wanted a coupe and I knew the 4series was going to be out a year after the F30. Wanted to drive something new from my manual S5 and got a benz. I probably would like my car more if manual was available.

Glad to hear BMW manuals are smooth. I can't wait to try it out.
