BMW what is up with the steering?

Morning everyone,

Does the F30 steering feel change? Some mornings my wheel feels too light in comfort mode and others mornings (like today) the steering feels heavier in comfort mode. Have any of you noticed this on your cars?
Mine is the 328i in luxury line model year 2012.

Why did BMW switch to EPS from hydraulic? The wheel felt soo much better in my 2007 328i coupe, I am assuming it was hydraulic back then?

Well thats my rant...sort of

Thank you! Probably the first post ever to comment on the steering in the new F30. Finally, someone points out something worthwhile. I can't wait to listen to all the informed input, given this completely new topic that has never, ever been discussed before.

Q. BMW what is up with the steering?

A. Absolutely nothing, save for individuals that choose to morbidly cling to the hydraulic steering rack of yesteryear in the name of resisting change, justifying their stance via perceived shortcomings in feel, weight and feedback of EPS.

I haven't felt my steering being any different from one day to the next, but the tire pressure explanation is pretty good. Pressure varies A LOT with temp.

My F30 335i has been pretty consistent - I don't get what all the fuss is about, when you compare an Audi A4 with the 328 F30 - the F30 wins all day.

Nothing much wrong with my steering, can't say I've noticed a big change from my old car that had hydraulic powered steering

I thought it was my imagination, but it does feel different sometimes here too. It's subtle, but depending on speed, and/or turns, it does vary a bit in resistance. I don't have the variable assist feature.

OP, you have a Lux line which isn't known as being the most sporty configurations of the F30 lineup. That being said, I have had no issues that you are talking about between my 13 328 or 14 335. Like others have suggested, I would check your tire pressure. Never know, could have an EPS rack that is failing or something steering related that is going bad.

Thank you all for the replies. I just had a wisdom tooth removed so once the pain goes away I will get those tire pressures checked. If I remember correctly my right rear tire usually loses more air than the others.

One of the reasons for the switch was for fuel economy.

Correct... but hmmm, which one to choose:
0.5 mpg better fuel economy?
Or compromised steering feel?

@visor

@evenkeel answered the question on "compromised" steering feel.

There is one upside to EPS (totally serious for a change). No more leaky power-steering reservoir dripping fluid on my alternator !!!! I had to cut and re-clamp those hoses pretty much every year on my E39.

Another upside: it acts the same in all temperatures.
