Week 5 of the car at the shop - * pics added

(UPDATE: Pics added - pics taken when i had to get a few things from my car)

So my car is going on week 5 of being at the BMW dealership.

Took it in for a "camera malfunction" error message. They told me that hey had a hard time replacing one of the cameras under the mirror and damaged the wiring harness in the process. Now they are waiting on a brand new harness from Germany (i assume) and have told me that it will take 4 days to install once they get it. The harness itself is $6,000 according to them (obviously i'm not paying for it as it's under warranty and it was their fault - which they've owned up to and i command them for it).

Just wondering if anyone has ever had their car in the shop for an extended period of time and what, if anything, should i be concerned about in the long run as my car will be significantly dismantled to replace the harness.

I had car in shop a long time once and my main gripe is they like to joyride in it. So check the mileage and look for scratch and dents.

Before the 335i MPE i had a 2014 X5d F15 for about 18 months. Out of 18 months 2 months that car was in their shop.
I ended up selling it because they could not fix it. At some point one of the dealership techs, blamed me for driving the car too hard )

Pics added... i don't think they'll be driving it (see note they added). And they are certainly not blaming anything on me. Just a little annoying that in the loaner i don't have satellite radio or traffic (they haven't activated it in the loaner for some reason).

Hopefully i'll get my car back soon, i guess the only bonus is that I save a bunch of kilometers on my car (north of 2.5K so far). And I really hope they get it all right when putting it back together.

that's pretty painful to look at, seeing they virtually ripped up the car's interior.

You better check out your leather seats when they are done, ripped leather or scratch panels. Those pics show messy way of storing your interior trim pieces.

My steering rack broke (f30 44000km 2012) and they had the part shipped from germany.

Had a 320 loaner for 4 days and when they told me that they would keep my car for a month I argued to have a 328 (same as mine) and they gently provided me one.

I kept sure track of the mileage and overall esthetic of my car at the end. After 10 days they repaired my car, i think they needed the 328 they lend to me haha

Geez man, I feel for you. That's fkn horrible, after you get your car back I would look somewheres else to have your ride serviced. I hope they have you a decent loaner at least

I had a 320 for the first week and told them i wanted to try the X3 (something different) and they set me up in a x3 3.5 with the M Package... not terrible (probably the best I can do out of their fleet of loaners), but i'm getting sick of it especially now that the nicer weather is around the corner.

I don't know why or what they were doing with that harness, but let's just say there will be a different guy working on this going forward.

Hi. FYI, I got this error when I first got my car two year's ago. took it into dealership and they ordered and replaced the front side camera's.

I still get this error often. Especially when cold. Sometimes the front side cameras don't work...only one at a time though, but it changes sides from left to right, lol. Last few times I have seen the warning is when I put the car into reverse. Strange thing is that all cameras are actually working...rear camera, bird's eye cameras and side cameras...all working fine. I just ignore it now. A lot of tech in these "fake M's" so it's bound to all go to shit at some point...this is why I leased. After four year's it's BMW's problem...and then the poor sap they sell the car to.

My guess is they did more than damage a mirror wire harness.

The cameras use a self contained coax looking cable with a weather resistant DIN style connector on end. It's called a HSD cable.

If the tech damaged that cable, it's a fairly easy replacement and fairly readily available (though they are often shipped from Germany). And one HSD cable is nowhere near $6000 even at crazy dealer pricing. It's maybe a $100 cable plus labor.

The HSD cable runs down the door, into the passenger footwear, then behind the dash and to the camera module located above drivers footwear. Most complicated part of that repair is r&r of door panel and weather gasket in door.

And, to see a dealer note that the car has no brakes. What?

Something more is going on...

actually the hsd cables from BMW are very expensive.
the one that runs from the TRSVC unit to the backup cam is 340 + tax at the dealer. and the ones for the mirrors are 280 each.

i was going to buy them and ended up making my own instead after seeing the price.

I've had 2 HSD cables changed under warranty and on my service receipts it showed less than $280 for the part. Nevertheless, even at $280 that's a long way from $6000.

I understand BMW has a had a lot of issues with the HSD cables and connectors on cable end and inside Camera body. There's a couple TSBs discussing this. And in typical manufacturer fashion, parts they have issues with, the cost gets jacked up.

my service coordinator will provide me with the details when all of this gets done. I'll ask for the part numbers and all of that as well to see exactly what was replaced.

I do have about 40K km worth of warranty left at this point, do you guys think it would be unreasonable to ask for extended warranty (CPO or whatever it's called) as i do have concerns about all this "electrical" work and the potential for things to go sideways down the road. Never mind all the rattles that will likely creep up.

highly unlikely bmw canada will give you extra 2 yrs extended warranty.

from bmw canada perspective, the warranty has done its job on the repair and there is no further reason to mandate them to give you more than it should. If you lease you car, then you can ask/negotiate for bmwfs for payment compensation, after all, a free loaner has been given to you.

I hear you on the warranty covering it so far, but at the end of the day they screwed up while trying to fix it. I'm not even sure this is going to go through BMW Canada or the dealers insurance (no idea how mistakes work with dealers).

At the end of the day i will likely not have my car for +/-2 months, yes they provided a loaner, but and x3 is not what i'm paying my payments on (i'm not financing through bmw unfortunately - so no breaks on payments).

I guess it will not hurt to ask, but just wanted to get someone elses opinion or experience they've had in similar situations (likely not many like this).

Usually BMW Canada will compensate your monthly payments if your car is in the dealer for an extended period of time for repairs.

For my E90 my car was in the shop for almost 2 months for transmission replacement.

BMW Canada waived a month's payment for me. but my E90 was a lease so im not sure if finance will be different.
