Extended Maintenance Plan Cost vs. Scheduled Maintenance Costs After 50k Miles

As my car approaches the end of the 50,000 mile with free maintenance and warranty, I am just trying to figure out if the extended plan is worth it. I know there is scheduled maintenance around 60,000 miles and another one at 90,000 so just wondering if the cost of those alone offset the extended plan and make it worth it? Without the plan, how much does the schedule services go for assuming its just maintenance and nothing is broken.

I wouldn't worry about the maintenance, its warranty what you should be worried about assuming yours might have just expired unless you extended it before it run out

The warranty is still valid for another 50k miles or 2 years so I have room on that unless I am missing something. The prices for the extended service/maintenance costs and the cost of showing up for the scheduled ones when the car tells me I was just trying to juggle the costs and see if it was worth it.

What my thought is:

Warranty: 6 years/100k miles
Maintenance: 4 years?/50k miles

My maintenance is expiring and the 60k service is around the corner.

Wondering the cost of that service with and without an extended maintenance plan.

What does the extended plan cost?

Wouldn't it be easy to look in your manual, see what BMW actual requires (not what your dealer recommends as this isn't what BMW will be paying for) then call the dealer and find out what these items will cost?

If you call the dealer and just say, "I am bringing my car in for the 60k mile service, do it" you will often get a lot of items done (and pay for) that were not in the manual.

Personally I would also look into an independent, pay him, and skip on the dealership for maintenance and for maintenance plans.

While right now you think you will keep the car another 50k miles there is at least a good chance you will change your mind. Is the plan transferable? Even then, it won't raise the value the same as what you have in it.

If I remember right, the extended maintenance for a 1 series is about $2,200 and extends for two additional years. You should get two additional scheduled services.

The deciding factor is whether you will need brakes during that period. Look at your service computer and see when it thinks the brakes will need to be replaced.

Also remember that the price of the service contract is negotiable. If you are a BMWCCA member they should also give you 10 to 15% off.

What are you driving? If it is an ///M and you daily drive it, yes is probably the answer. If it is a standard model, probably a toss-up.

Yea it is the M. I drive about 15k a year. Brakes are still good. If the $2,200 is for the two year plan, how much does this one check up cost that I would look at for a comparison? Also, if you go elsewhere than just BMW, does that cut into the 100k maintenance protection that comes with BMWs as the work wasn't done there and could screw me if I decide to keep the car longer?

Do the maths. See what maintenance you will have over the time period and the costs, add them up and compare that figure to the cost of the plan.

And remember, you can increase the value you receive by driving more! A real win-win.
