Apple IPhone Charging

Hey Guys/Gals,

I was wondering about your experience, on charging your IPHone using the USB port in the glovebox. It seems to me that if I am playing music and have the bluetooth feature on the charging is incredibly slow. It seems that the charging barely keeps up with the usage.

It's probably because a USB port will only put out 0.5amps (PC USB ports are about 0.5amps) roughly, not really enough to keep up with heavy usage and charging. Can anyone confirm this is the case for the car?

I thought the USB in the glovebox was only for adding music to the Hard Drive. I plugged my iPhone in it once and I do not recall it charging at all.

The one in the glove box will not charge your phone. Get a USB adaptor and use the power outlet underneath the glovebox.

I charge my iPod Touch 5G in the armrest (center console), simultaneously while playing music back all via USB. My guess is it's putting out 0.5 amps, just like someone else said above. You'd probably have better luck charging it faster via cigarette ligher adapter, but I'm not 100% sure on this.

I have Bluetooth connected for calls/SMS and use the iPod cable in the centre console for charging and music playback. Although charging isn't lightning fast, it definitely charges. I'd say it would increase by about 20% over a 25 minute drive, that's what I've noticed over my general work - home route.

As for the glovebox USB port, I've got another cable in there that friends have used to charge their phones, and it works. Not sure why it's not supposed to?

I find the same thing... the charging definitely slows down if I am talking using the Bluetooth connection or playing music via my y-cable. I just have to make a conscious effort to have a break from the phone if I am super low on battery so that I can boost that charge level as quickly as I can.
Frustrating... however, apparently the new iPhone 5S has an improved battery life which is exciting for us phone junkies!

Mine ('13 328ix) charges, albeit slowly. It also disconnects the bluetooth audio when the iPhone cable is connected, and then you have to manually enable BT streaming after disconnecting the cable. I'm guessing that to accommodate the use of different phones, that port is limited to 0.5 amps (or less) so as not to damage devices that don't have 'smart' charging capability.
