Coolant @ 100 deg after 6 miles of duel carriageway , the car is 2012 X3 35D M Sport and now has covered 8K miles, it has been fast warm-up since new.
I live just off the carriageway, so straight onto it from cold.

Ah! Coolant at 100C, you are reading your righthand gauge which is oil temperature, that explains it. (Note the oil can symbol at the bottom right under the thermometer). ECT doesn't run at 100C on a diesel, around 88 - 92C is normal working range. Obviously will climb a bit on extreme load and during active DPF regeneration.

BTW, what temperature does the oil temperature gauge read, working the engine hard on a cruise?

BMW have given up on coolant gauges and go for the oil temperature. Should have both really, as both are useful and give insight on when to drive an engine and when to be restrained. You'd need to access the hidden menu to read engine coolant temperature (ECT).

BTW, Your F31 will have the oil temperature gauge, but again no engine coolant gauge. Whether you can bring up ECT on the iDrive on the latest models, I don't know. May still need to use the hidden menu.

The fuel econony of the 30d looks impressive on paper but I'm just a bit concerned about mpg with real world driving. The claimed mpg for my 20d is supposed to be around 68mpg on a run however I can only manage 55/56.

If I thought I could get 50+ in the 30d then it would be an easy decision. There's also the temptation of having more performance as opposed to choosing another 3 with the same engine as what I currently have. I just don't want to opt for one & then find out I can only manage early 40's.

Decisions decisions
I run a X3 3.0D with ths same engine and auto box. I can get 50mpg if I take it real easy but after a couple of long A road runs I got 45.4mpg @ 60.8 mph over 300+ miles and 49.2 mpg @ 49.2 mph on a 60 mile run.

You should get an easy 50+ from a 3 series, you know you want the smooth 6, go for it

My 2p on the 2 liter vs 3 liter.....

I found on the test drive (I had a 320D sport 8sp.auto for a few hours), that the 2.0 engine felt very thrashy and loud in the F30.....much more so than it felt in the E90. Felt OK power wise when giving it the beans.

It also failed my performance test, which is the acceleration speed you need to get you into that gap on the motorway. Sort of a seat of the pants 60-70 or 70-80 type thing. There was a definite delay before picking up speed (relative to my C220CDI), which meant the 2.0 litre was not an option.

I'm hoping the 3.0 litre will be better on both counts.

I notice BMW have quietly dropped any mention of the grille slats that were fitted to last of the E90's. Does that mean they weren't worth the effort and have been dropped?

I currently have an E90 318i Msport Edition, which returns 30mpg on average, my new F30 3.0d is due for delivery on 01-10-12, as long as it does more than 30mpg on average I will be happy! I test drove a 530d over a mixed 150 mile route and returned 45mpg....the 5 is a bigger car, was loaded with 4 passengers and a bootfull of stuff.

You'll get much more than 30mpg.

When we read mpg figures on forums we easily get distracted by headline figures, averages are the real guide. Sites like Honest John with his mpg data show what averages folks really get.

I know my car will give exceptional mpg driven lightly over distance, but the long term average over 55k miles is 37mpg. The fact I've returned over 49mpg over distance, in mixed conditions, in a pre ED 330d auto touring, sounds better.

Fair point, but even F30 ED doesn't have em anymore.....or atleast they haven't mentioned them in any of the blurb.

Thought they would have all had them.

Driving at Autobahn speeds (200 - 250 kph) for long durations, which model diesel car or wagon (BMW or any brand) do you think would get the BEST MPG, and be able to deal with the speed?

A friend and I did a run from Frankfurt to Munich in a 330d wagon and went 250kph most of the way (whenever it was unrestricted) and it was amazingly smooth and got great MPG. But I was wondering if anything else would be better. What do you guys think?

After running a f30 320d for 12 months & doing 32k miles, I averaged 58mpg.

I have just upgraded to a 330d xdrive, only had it a week but it seems to get between 45-50mpg on a run.

Where you notice the difference is short journeys or stop/start.

320d or 330d? Is this question really being asked?

330d all day, everyday. What a machine.

41mpg here btw but that's with a lot of vroom! So could easily be improved.

The 330d M Sport with its 6 cyl Diesel engine is a far superior car to a 320d M Sport with its rattly 2 litre 4 cyl Diesel Engine. The difference in performance is so addictive, is in another league and more than makes up for the slight difference in real world fuel economy. Its like comparing Diamonds with Coal.

Actually it's 0-62 in 7.4secs! 0-60 is 7.2secs!

But it's 184bhp not 186

I do agree that it has plenty of power, easily enough for driving on public roads!

I had one as a courtesy car for a couple of months earlier this year, and have now ordered one, and really can't wait!

this could only be written by someone with a 320d! The performance difference is considerable, and the refinement is totally different. The 4-pot is painful on the ears to rev out! I think the 320d probably steers a little bit sweeter on twisties though.

You are right that this engine is a pain without the auto... no shove whilst in top gear for the 60-90mph that everyone needs on the motorway cruise to pick up speed when someone pulls in.

If you've only had a 4 pot diesel and economy is your biggest factor then stick with the 320d. If you've never had a 330d before then you won't miss it.... just don't test drive it!
