Magnaflow exhaust

Hey Guys,

I went into a highly recommended exhaust shop ( In Australia ) and spoke about a few exhaust options. In the end he recommended a axleback single magnaflow exhaust muffler to quad tips. I have tried to watch some videos of other bmw's with magnaflow and they seem to have a nice but very deep tone. Reviews from people who have them are very positive but most people seem to recommend other brands like remus, awe, akra, ect.

Anyone with magna feel like giving a review? and is there a reason people are choosing other brands over magna? or is it just one of those situations where people like to stick with commonly used name?

Also for me being in aus it works out about 800 cheaper then shipping other brands to aus.

I drive a 2014 335i as well.

thanks in advance.

Is there any reason you prefer awe? I did notice Magna seems a lot more common on American made muscle cars then euro cars. Just wasn’t sure why

You will be desapointed by the sound of the magnaflow.. it's almost like stock.. I went with borla for my N55 and damn, best decision I've made! Go check on YouTube borla exhaust 335

magna flow is like the most generic entry level brand for exhausts for all cars.

Do NOT buy a magna flow exhaust for your 335i, there are soooo many better brands out there. Thats what kids do to their civics and mustangs.

so many axelback and cat back systems out there for our cars.

MPE, dinan, remus, awe, akra, rpi, vrsf, borla an the list goes on.

Please do not put a magna flow on... i beg you...

I was thinking Remus axleback but I just wasn’t a fan on their tips. Would the axleback muffler with custom quad tips still sound the same ?

The best exhaust system I had was custom built by a local exhaust specialist. The mandrel bends were perfect, high grade tuv approved stainless steel and, a choice of tailpipes. It worked out cheaper and better than any other exhaust I have had. So if you have a specialist who makes systems then consider that route too.

He does make his own systems just seems to really like Magnaflow muffler sections on the bmw’s / audi’s. I can get the Remus muffler for $1000 but the extra $900 for the quad tips seems excessive. If it will sound the same I can possibly just get the Remus muffler and he can custom do the rest.

Prices are in Aus dollars

I've also been perusing the idea of having an exhaust shop build a system for me. Even looked at some transverse mufflers (single inlet dual outlet where the outlets are on opposite sides of the unit ) to match some of the designs ive seen on some name brand systems. I could only find a Borla unit at around $300 for just the muffler. With that price I feel it would bring the custom system to around a fully built system I can ship from the countless vendors. This is assuming the shop is using mandrel bends and stainless steel.

I would also love to include a valve like the gthaus or akra systems, add a remote system and management and we are talking loads of time spent and almost the same investment. Sort of makes sense to just shell out the 3K for a nice system at that point and reap the benefits of having someone else do all of that for you.

But I don't want to spend 2K+ just for an exhaust. First world problems.

To stay on topic though, magnaflow is popular in the Audi/VAG aftermarket world as well. They sound good and are relatively cheap so you can't beat that combo. Unless you are an elitist and binge off of having spent $xxxx on something.

The Magnaflow design he mentioned is a single in dual out as well.

I dont think the sound should be any different due to the tips only.

There are so many reviews on the different exhaust setups on the forums and youtube. you can easily find sound clips.

i personally have M performance exhaust muffler with catless dp and jb4 and its perfect, very nice tame sound on WOT and quiet on idle. coldstart is super loud tho but its a good alarm for the neighbors

The Mustang Crowd prefer 'Flowmasters'...not MagnaFlo. If the OP likes the sound, go for it. I've liked how they sound on V8s. I can't say I've heard one on any N54,etc. though

Curious, why are you so adamant about getting a quad? Remus sounds good but the 335 I was looking at was quad exhaust and I thought it looked weird coming from a 335. Just my opinion though.

Just a personal preference really. The exhaust shop I went to had some nice custom twins. He showed me a few photos on some other cars he put them on and I was impressed. That’s why I was considering Remus axleback but get him to make some tailpipes to his twin tips. It just depends how much it will cost for him to make them compared to the Remus tailpipes.

Was the inlet opposite both outlets? This is the only configuration I could find on their website.

A transverse muffler, in comparison is a configuration where the inlet shares a "side" of the muffler as one of the two outlets, or adjacent to the outlets. Pics attached to better explain.

The photo not showing the MagnaFlow branded muffler is transverse. It would be the transverse config the MPE, stock, and a lot of other brands chose if you move the inlet to the side of muffler at the bottom of the photo. That side would be facing the engine.

It seems AWE are the only branded offering that chose to use the standard muffler configuration for their set up. You can tell how having the outlets all on one side of the muffler forced them to use a lot more piping for one side to reach the exhaust cutout in the bumper. Using up valuable space below the trunk. But it works for them because their unit sounds amazing from all its reviews. And I don't doubt it. Their units received the same praise in the Audi world as well. Im a little sad they don't offer us their switchpath config which I believe is valved. Just the f80 guys I've seen so far

The only thing in the tips is the valve. You can have the shop cut the end pipes off your stock exhaust and with a little work out them on the Remus. Cheapes high end solution.

Well after all that I think I’m going to go with awe axle back exhaust with 90mm black tips and see how it sounds/looks and go from there . I feel their tips will be a nicer finish then the Remus.

if that's how it sounds on a V8 then I think I6 will sound even weaker....get a better exhaust. Cheaper is not always better.
