Mine are now as they should have been from the factory in the first place. Seat bases and hinges were replaced under warranty and I had an X5 for the day whilst they did it

How were you all able to get this issue resolved? I have had no luck with the dealer or BMWNA? Does it just take persistance? Its fustrating because I expected better quality and service.

Just went in and told them. They wanted to replace them. No persistence.

However, I recommend not getting them replaced. Almost everyone had their car damaged in the process.

My dealer just cleaned mine. I guess in retrospect, I'll just keep my scratchless side sills for now. As long as there's no issues down the line...

I haven't spent any time underneath my front seats lately so I'm not sure if there are rust spots. I prefer to sit on top of my sits and not under them.

That's fine until the seat pan rusts out completely and you fall through it.

Rust doesn't stop on it's own, it just keeps eating...

I have a few rust spots. As long as it doesn't expand, I think I can live with it. Also, dealers will probably refuse to replace them unless it's all red.

I only had a few small rust spots too.

I mentioned them to the SA when I took the car in for it's 15K mile oil change just to be on record that I had the rust issue assuming they would say it's normal or not serious enough to fix.

They took a quick look and immediately ordered new seats and installed them 2 weeks later when they came in.

Sorry, just the seat bases/frames. It apparently takes about 6-7 hours of labor per seat to replace.

They ordered and installed these part numbers: 52-10-7-243-530 and 52-10-7-243-527

I recommend not to look under your seats...
Once you look under,,, it may not be good for your mental health.

One thing to keep in mind, if you are purchasing and ever decide to sell - potential buyers who do their due diligence might stumble on this thread...just sayin

I'm pleased with the outcome, especially as the paintwork wasn't scratched in the process Now everything is sorted I can get on with enjoying the car for what it was designed for

For those that have had there rusted seat frames fixed, has the rust come back? Were you told that the new seat frames were coated or something of that nature? For those that spoke with customer relations, what was there response?

AFAIK, it was a mistake by seat-frame manufacturer, intentionally or mistakenly, they skipped rust-proof coating process until Oct. 2012 productions.
After BMW found out, they fixed the rusty seat issue since Nov. 2012 production 3-series & 1-series. (without any service bulletin issued...)

So, I guess all the replacement seat frames shall have rust-proof coating....

As you have 4-year warranty by default, you can claim new seat frames if you find out rusty spots within 4 years.

One sales guy (who's driving rusty red car) says surface rust is normal to every car in the world, but just ignore him!

New cars should not, never ever, have rusty spots inside the car! Period!

Surface rust particles inside the car may or may not cause cancer or any other type of lung disease... (believe it or not ^^).

The cancer thing is a little far fetched but BMW sure is guilty of trying to sweep this one under the rug. The supplier in question must have been in real trouble with BMW though, I can't imagine what deal BMW got out of this... Must have been sweet. Too bad customers always get the short end of the stick unless they are forum members of course

Those who had there seat frames replaced must of had a dealership who actually takes care of its customers. My seat frame looks like the picture above in this thread. The dealer refuses to replace the frames because they say they will re-rust again. Then BMWNA claims that it is not a manfacturing defect based on what the dealer told them. And since the rust is inside vs outside, it is not covered by the rust warranty.

This is the worst service experience I have ever had. This has definately soured my experience with the dealer. My previous e90 did not have this issue.
