How to know if I have an EfficientDynamics version

Hello everyone,

I have recently bought a used 320d from 2013 (in Europe). It came with 16" rims, which I'd like to change to 18" rims.

Now, I've read a few times before that people have had trouble with bigger wheels on the effecient dynamics version of the F30, so I'm wondering if there's any way of knowing if mine is an ED version or not.

Is it possible to determine using the VIN? What should I be looking for?

Thanks!

From BMW:

BMW EfficientDynamics is the name of the strategy from BMW to minimise fuel consumption and CO2 emissions while, at the same time, increasing dynamics and driving pleasure. It is a package of functions covering the drive system, energy management and vehicle concept – and is a standard feature in every BMW.

If you decode the VIN, it'll tell you the model

When you decode the vin, do the efficient dynamics editions say so specifically?
I've decoded my car's vin in a bunch of sites and haven't been able to tell.

Thank you guys for replying

It's my understanding that all F30's have the "Efficient Dynamics" features. They are standard.

Regardless, my car says "EfficientDynamics" on both rear windows. I would check there.

I heard there are F30 which are specifically efficient dynamics, outside of the efficient dynamics programme you mentioned.

Also I don't have anything saying efficient dynamics on the rear windows.

If you decode your vin, does it say anything?

Yes, the 320d ED is a specific model with different engine bhp to the regular 320d. Less hp, was 163. The ED also has other changes, I think the gearing may be different. Suspension is lower, even without the sport pack/model options.

In Europe there is a regular 320d and specific 320d ED model, which has additional 'efficient-dynamics' tuning.

There are ED models of the 320i and 320d, but the US never got them. The gasoline models used an N13 engine instead of an N20 or B48. The diesels had an N47 either way, but the ED model was set up a little differently.

The type code is characters 4-7 in the VIN and you can work it out from that, but the easier thing to do is to plug your VIN into realoem.com and see whether it comes back as a 320d or “320d ed”.

I love a good puzzle, so after learning there were different models of the 320d in Europe I spent a couple minutes digging around in used car websites in Germany.

It looks like a 320d and a 320d ed are in different emissions classes too. My understanding is that effects registration costs, so you might know that. A 320d is Euro5 and a 320d ED is Euro6 for emissions.

Yours is a normal 320D.

Not only does it come back as a 320D (not 320D ED) on Real OEM, But when I ran it through bmwvin.com it also came back as a normal 320D.

For comparison purposes run this VIN through a decoder: J726284 realoem.com will mark it as a 320d ed, and bmwvin.com will list the model as 320D EFFDYN EDITION (EUR).

You're good to go in your non ED 320d.

Thank you all for the explanations. Beyond educational, this has been a relief! Now I can get some 18" rims
