Exclamation 2013 F30 328i Steering Clunk (fixed)

So I have a bad cluck in my steering when the car is off and I turn the steering wheel back and forth. Also it’s noticeable at different times driving slow over stuff and at certain angles.

I took it to the dealer and they saying it’s the lower steering joint assembly. They had to order the part so we shall see if this fixes the issue.

Just wanted to post just incase someone else is having this issue.

Update........

They replaced the steering joint assembly and that was not the issue. They are ordering a new steering rack.

They gave me a brand new 2018 330xi pretty much fully loaded with only 28 miles on it as a loaner so they can keep my car for as long as they want

Those steering racks are really too weak, same issue here.

Do you have any suspension mod?

No suspension mods. Car has just under 48,000 miles on it

40000km on my side; and they had another f30 in the shop that needed rack replacement as well.

I wonder if we could fit m3 steering racks!

I am just happy they are covering it under CPO. I will update once I get it back. I will say I am happy with the service they have given me at the dealer.

They are saying my car will be done today so let’s hope it fixes it. Yeah mine was the same way as yours.

Well my car is still in the shop and should be out today but they had to clear the coding done to my car to be able to program the new rack

Interested to hear what this repair would have cost out of pocket. Seems like a potential common issue for the rest of us going forward.

If you could post the part numbers replaced and, assuming you have to sign a paper with the actual cost of work (like warranty) - let us know how much it would have cost you had you not been CPO.

Yeah I am just a couple thousand miles away from no more CPO. I will post what ever information I can.

Finally got my car back and total cost was $3600. They replaced the steering rack and my drivers door lock actuator and lower steering column was replaced but was not the cause of the steering clunking.

Damn!

So assuming the "extras" cost $600 or so...

An F30 steering rack replacement is three grand. Wow. I knew it would be $2k all day but $3k is pretty steep. Wonder if its realistically possible to DIY this without a forreal set up (air tools / lift / etc).

There wasn’t a price break down but they replaced the lower steering column first and put it all back together to find out that wasn’t the issue. Then they replaced the rack and did an alignment, also took the drivers door apart and replaced the actuator.

A lot was labor. I am going to send a thanks email to the manager and let them know how well I was threaded by the SA and mechanic.
