If you bought new, then get rid of the car before it goes out warranty. The dealer will sell it to another buyer as a CPO. If you re buying used, get a CPO and get rid of it before that ends.

What are the better companies for buying this extended warranty? I want to consider it before the factory warranty expires.

It's all just a matter of when and where you want to pay. If you pay up front, you can finance that $2500 warranty, so you are paying a small dollar amount per day for your repairs, with interest. Or you can try your luck and hope you have <$2500 in repairs over 50K miles. Realistically you just need one stupid thing to go for it not to be worth it - like a xenon headlamp... want to pay $1250 when it ultimately blows? So either save money up front if you have lots of problems, or lose money in the end if you have zero problems. It's just a matter of which risk you want to take.

Check out GEICO's Mechanical Repair Insurance. You must be a GEICO member to buy it.

the good thing about BMW is that the failures are consistent .

For the E46, go to a forum and you will be told exactly WHAT and WHEN something will go wrong (i.e HVAC exchange, window regulator, control arm bushing, etc). Most Indy BMW shops will already have these things priced out since it is so common.

I'd say, in about 2-3 years, you can get a good feeling of maintenance costs of F30s after warranty period..so that would probably be the best time to make your judgement.

I had my E46 for 12 years, and probably spent close to $5k in repairs and maintenance post-warranty period. About half of that was done by Indy shop and the rest by myself.

I personally wouldn't use the earlier and less complex cars as a proxy for what an out of warranty F30 would cost.

Over in the E89 section there is a thread about N54 injector failure and it looks like that is about a ~$3k repair, parts and labor. Even if someone did a DIY or went to an indy shop there is still DME coding that needs to be done, possibly by dealer unless the indy has the BMW specific equipment.

If the O2 sensors had to be done on the same visit, that is pretty much $5000 in one shot...

Current Cost for Gold Extended Warranty

I was quoted $4,500 for a Gold Warranty for a 335i 2014 for 7 years/100,000 miles. The salesman said that the dealer's cost is $3,800.

I was then quoted $3,950 by another dealer.

What is the going rate these days?

I understand that you can buy the extended warranty from any dealer in the nation for it to apply.

Thanks!

Good point about buying the warranty from any dealer. When we bought a Honda Odyssey 12 years ago, I read an Odyssey forum to learn a little about Honda. A finance guy from a dealer in Maryland frequented the forum and advertised extended warranties for $100 over cost. Sold a lot of them that way -- including to me.

Anybody know a dealer who might like to give f30post members special pricing on warranties? I know mine wouldn't but others might be more willing to play.

I got platinum EVP coverage. If you are familiar with just about any German car makes at all, then you know that something will go out at some point. It may not be powertrain. For instance, when my wife had her previous E46 3, her AC system went haywire. Ended up having to replace the whole unit. It was still under regular warranty. But the thought of what something like that would cost if it happened after the warranty was enough to convince me to get the EVP platinum. Frankly I do not expect the engine to blow up per se. I feel as a whole that the I6 is reliable. But I definitely would be concerned about the electronics long-term. Only time will tell if the additional cost was worth it.

Now my question, are they really that unreliable? I've only owned Japanese cars up to now (Lexus, Acura, Infiniti), and other then minor repairs, never really saw a need to a extended warranty, but the dealer really had me freaked out that these cars just fall apart, which I find odd considering consume reports say the the 328's are good and to stay away from the 335's (a model that I was no interested in anyway). Do folks find the BMW extended warranties any good?

I did find out that BMW just resells a 3rd party warranty and puts their name on it, its not handled by BMW at all, but a 3rd party vendor. I found this out when I called BMW customer relations, they directed me to the 3rd party company, when I talked to them, they had not info other than to talk to the dealer if you had any questions.

thanks.. Tim
i don't get it, what am i missing here? according to bmwusa.com its $2095 to increase the maintenance plan another 2yrs/50k for a total of 6yrs/100k for all F30s. Why is this not the plan you were offered??

No, maintenance plan just extends that "free" maintainance. If something breaks, thats not covered by the normal maintenance plan.

Have you ever considered leasing? If you only keep your car for 5 years, when you factor in the cost of buying, sales tax, finance charges if you financed, cost of the extended warranty and depreciation, it would simply be cheaper for you to lease. Do you drive a lot of miles? If not, I would consider leasing next time.

This. You pay somewhere no matter what, in theory, but if you purchase an extended warranty you pay whether something breaks or not. It's always best to wait to purchase an extended warranty. This way you aren't rolling the cost of that warranty into the total amount you are financing and paying interest on it. It's generally not advisable to purchase an extended warranty when you buy the car. There is no point in doing this. When you have a car that starts nearing the powertrain warranty expiration, you will get a slew of notices in the mail offering to sell you an extended warranty. That is a better time to buy one, if at all.

34k miles engine blew-out?

.
Am not implying the member would not know what to have done, but this is an extreme example, but covered by either state (USA) or provincial laws (CAN). Essentially, the core of these laws is that expensive new items such as cars cannot have major hidden flaws or failure to offer reasonable performance. And 34 000 miles (vs industry standard of hundreds of thousands), essentially the manufacturer would replace the engine for free. Going to court is usually unlikely, as a single TV reporter calling results in "the manufacturer offered the Jasons a full vehicle/engine replacement at no cost.'

My brother, an attorney, was telling me that German car manufacturers (esp Audi) got nailed on electronics (multiple glitches = total vehicle replacement vs court date); another item is perforation rust as well, modern vehicles, under 10 yrs can loose in court - especially if the overall vehicle turns out well kept.

Engines are not only expected to performs for hundreds of thousands of kms, but never can they blow out.

Am picking up this Thursday my 335i M Sport Performance Edition and am getting 7yrs 160 000 kms for 2800$ warranty, for all of the reasons listened above: turbos, sensors, axle, Adaptive M Suspension, and much more that would be 1000$ a shot.
