Decisions decisions.....

So after a while away with another manufacturer I'm now looking to get back into a BMW after having an e90 330d & an e93 330i I ended up buying a brand new Golf gtd & 2 years later I've had enough of it, bored of 4 cylinders.

So now i need an estate so I've settled on my next car being a touring, now the next decision is petrol or diesel?? I'm tempted to go petrol & get a 340i but AUC cars are still out of my budget, £25k, my other choice was a 335d or even another 330d, I've seen a great AUC 330d x drive with a fantastic spec, it's got adaptive suspension, HK, electric seats, high beam assist, reversing camera, oyster leather, LED adaptive headlights, Pro Nav & HUD, its. 2015 15 reg car, so would that be the LCI version or pre lci?? The spec is making me thing this could be a good car to have, only thing lacking I'd like is a pan roof.

I'm not in a hurry & am quite happy to wait until 340i touring start coming into my budget & with the non stop chat against diesel cars I'm thinking a petrol purchase might be the wiser choice. The economy figures from the 340 seems excellent for what it is & could possibly hold value better than diesel cars in the future maybe??

Would opinion be to wait for 340i's to come into budget??

I think waiting for a 340i as long as your mileage isn't too high is a sensible choice. Although I bought a 335d only last year, its obvious a cultural shift from diesel is taking place. As much as i love my 335d and don't have anything against diesel cars, I can see this one being my last.

I had my mind set on a 335D. I tried one, loved it. I then saw one, loved it but it sold.
I then saw a couple more that were either not what I wanted or utter utter dogs.

I upped my budget from 24k that I was looking at to 26k and one appeared.

Sure I got lucky and got a UAC one with nearly all the toys for my budget and it seems at the moment you've got to pay £1.5k more to get something with less spec.

I've only had the car a week and love it. So glad I was persuaded away from the 335D.

I only do 6-8k a year so mpg doesnt bother me too much.

I do around 11000 miles a year & from what I've read a 340i should do more mpg than I was getting when I had my e93 330i, that was giving me around 28mpg so anything above 30mpg from a 340 would be fantastic imo, my current gtd is only giving me 42mpg, cold weather has dropped it by about 10%, still not great from a 2lt diesel.

Are the 335d a Euro 6 engine??

My 335d is averaging 37mpg. People on here say there is around a 10mpg difference between both cars. I'm pretty certain the 335d is EU6

Yeah I tried one too, a friend has one & they are ridiculously quick but I want to have peace of mind buying a car & I don't think I'd get that from buying another diesel in the current climate, every day it seems there's more negativity about them & a lot of the modern Diesel engines don't deserve that.

I spoke to the last BMW dealer I bought an auc from for the Mrs about a 340i & he seems to think it could be 6-12 months before they are in my 25k budget, I've let him know what I want & he's going to give me a shout when something comes up, is your 340 an x drive version??

Speedwise, do you think there's much difference between a 335d & 340i?? I've yet to drive a 340 so have no feel to what they are like.

37 is good for a 300+ bhp car, makes me realise how bad the gtd mpg figures really are.

All 335d are x drive aren't they?? I could be wrong thinking that. Would the x drive system lower the mpg figures a bit?

Speed wise the 335D felt faster off the line due to the power delivery but any other time the 340 just feels better.

26k, touring, sunroof, h+k, tow bar, electric memory heated seats, pro nav, folding mirrors, 19" rims, msport suspension, tinted rears. Basically a decent spec for not much more than the 335s.

Expect more like 25mpg though.

Oh and it's a lci, rwd version

I'm selling my big spec 2015 F30 335d shortly. Estoril Blue with red leather, adaptive xenons, HUD, M Sport Plus, extended warranty etc. Covered 42k mway miles. Pretty much every extra apart from sun roof and electric seats.

About to put it through the MOT (March) and once it's got the all clear I'll be selling for £21k if anyone's interested.

Based in St Albans during the week.

For comparison sake there was something VERY similar to the above (pre lci, adaptive xenons etc) but it had a sunroof and electric seats and around half the mileage, AUC from somewhere up in Birmingham ans it was 26k so the above is a decent price (imo)

How can you predict the future like that? Amazing
If you're talking about passing the MOT, it's because it's got MOT protect and if it needs anything doing outside of that then I'll get it done

All 335d are EU6, there is no xdrive 340.

B58 engine is a masterpiece. Power, noise, response, mpg, all great! bmw made an engine using voodoo, it’s the one thing I really miss from my m140. I was same as you, 340 out of my budget so 335d it was.

I don't know if you have test driven any F31's but having just sold an E92 I was surprise how much more refined the E9# are.Steering feel is better by a long way. lots of F31 owner are less than impressed with road noise. Also LCi F31's are the way to go with extra bracing underneath, resulting in better handling.

Go for the LCI, prices are similar to pre-LCI, but the car is improved in many ways.

Good luck, will be keeping an eye how you get on! That seems like a good price. I was about to market my '14 335d, very close spec (+leccy seats) but Melbourne Red and Beige interior, and 75k miles. I'm keeping it another few months then will do the same, hope to get about 16k with the extra miles and age but looks like that might be pushing it with these low-miler LCIs going for low 20s.

Thanks mate, it will be what it will be ultimately. Whilst dealers won't take notice of options at trade in, I'd imagine most private buyers will choose options and ACS springs over a minimal rear light cluster change..... I hope!

Everywhere you look people are praising the x40i engine, so I think I'm going to wait a while longer & hope they start coming into my budget at AUC level soon.

Any regrets getting the 335d??

I've seen road noise mentioned a few times, especially on the concrete sections of the M25, I'd defo be going for an LCI car, a few changes make it worthwhile, LED lights etc etc

The b58 is a cracking engine and the s drive cars are better set up for a more sporty feel.

Dont let that take away from the twin turbo 3L diesel powerplant in the 335d. Its one of the best diesel units ever made imo. Neck and neck with the 340i power wise, up to sensible speeds at least but at the same time capable of 45mpg on a motorway drive.

Current enviroment is pretty anti diesel and yes it does lack the drama of the petrol but if you are more interested in comfort and economy as a mile muncher its a fantastic car.

I can get 42mpg out of my 340i on a motorway drive, I'd like to think a 335d could achieve a bit better than 45.
