Escort or Valentine 1

Escort has a few new electronic features and perhaps a bit more sensitive now, but the Directional Arrows and number of units are also a great help in detection.

You really cannot go wrong with either.

Does PR use X, K, Ka or Laser and in what percentages of the total would you estimate?

And search the Electronics forum....this has been asked many times.

Here's a start:

This. Don't buy a cheap detector. I personally prefer Escort (have had both).

I have the new Escort Passport Max. I just picked up my 2014 335 M-Sport and had the K40 360 with front & rear Laser Defusers. If you have PDK, Blind Spot, etc. this will set off the alarm, so you need to make some adjustments, which K40 can assist you with. I'm not sold on the k40, as I've had performance issues with it, especially on my 2013 335 M-Sport. I will say they have the best customer service and will do everything possible to make sure the system is performing at optimum levels.

I have an Escort 8500 and recently bought a V1. Escort has crapped out on me twice, requiring a factory "rebuild". V1 has been problem free. Overall, I like the V1 better; arrows are a useful feature. That being said, I think Escort has some fancy tech out now with GPS and whatnot.

i've been using v1 for over 10 years -- works great and has saved me several times. You have to learn to read it though to filter out the false alarms.

V1 all the way... picks up cops 3-4 miles out on decent road without too many big curves.

My 9500ix has been incredible, saved me numerous times. I run it with x-band and k-band disabled, as Ka is the only band run around here (no red light cams in MI). So the GPS feature is pretty useless I suppose. I rarely get falses, which supposedly is the downfall of the V1 (although maybe not if you disable K/X?).

The new Escort Max is supposed to be more technically advanced and quicker to detect targets due to the ability to better partition the Ka spectrum (better performance on order of less than a second, but that might be critical). Apparently the firmware is still buggy though, but eventually it will be the best detector on the market from what I've read.

Make sure you do a nice clean install. I've read the the laser jammers are only worth it if you get the top of the line quad high powered ones that are like 2k.

Edit - most of my info was sourced from this recent thread on the zine about the new escort max.

Isn't radar illegal where you are? To the point that they use detector detectors?

Yep, I have a jammer built in to mine, as well as jammer detection.

Always been a big fan of V1 because of the arrows so you know where it's coming from.

Either or, you can't really go wrong with V1 or Escort. Just don't go cheap on a detector/jammers.
