Why would you want iOS in a car ? this sounds like a terrible idea.

What is the number for the BMW Customer Hotline? Im curious to ask someone in the know if these iDrive changes will be included into a 650i Gran Coupe produced in Sept. 2012. Thanks for the info!

Are there more news/confirmations, if the new navagation system is included in the July+ production of the sedan F30? I ordered a 320i 2 months ago and changed it two days ago to the xdrive model because I wanted it to have the new idrive system (and there is alot of snow where I live).

Now my dealer is telling me, that he thinks that my car has still the old navigation system because F30 sedans are excluded from the update...

...

... it really would be a dealbreaker for me!

Actually I think it sounds like a great idea! Toyota is already working on a mirrorlink system. Mobile OSs get updated much more frequently than car manufactures' systems. Having the option to mirrorlink iOS, Android, or Windows phone would give everyone the choice of running whatever they are most familiar with.

Only thing getting in the way though, is getting Apple, Google, and MS to agree on some kind of mirrorlinking standard so that more car companies would adopt this.

You seem confused, MirrorLink is supposed to be the connectivity standard, and it is not about running a phone OS in the car.

All the OEMs would need to do is install AirPlay to allow wireless mirroring. Done. Or HDMI-IN.

I just ordered my 320i, delivery due end of August. I asked my dealer (in Luxembourg) about the new satnav and here is the reply I received:

"in accordance with the BMW productmanagement the navigationsoftware is preview for November this year.

Your 320i is preview for end of august."

What I understand from this is that the update will be available for the cars with November delivery and onward. I really hope she's wrong, though..

A connectivity standard for what? For connecting your phone to your in-car touch screen. Thus, controlling your phone (and OS) through the touchscreen in your car.

Is there any information, like a user guide or white paper regarding the specific feature changes released in this update? I like the screen shots, but I'd like to see a list of the specific changes from the previous system.

I still don't have a clear picture of what has actually been improved (other than hardware). The sat nav looks more or less the same except for some slightly fancier graphics and this is pretty much the same for the rest of the pictures.

I wouldn't care too much if this was the case.

Of the improvements listed ...

>>Streamlined radio/media menu structure
What improvements are there with the music menu. The current one can be clumsy (for eg once random is selected if you use the steering wheel control to go to the next song it is de-selected).

• Improved navigation submenu structure
Details?

• Advanced Real-Time Traffic Information
What is new, already have it?

• Weather information in navigation map
What is new, already have it?

• POI enrichment*
What is different?

How is AirPlay any different from BT audio streaming ?

Why would you want to replicate a iOS screen on the CID ? This makes no sense.

Agreed. Suggesting that iOS should be somehow shoe horned into car system is a stupid idea. The uses cases are completely different.

I don't agree. If it is possible to stream the screen to idrive as it is today for the tv, you have a lot of possibilities. E.g. I would prefer to use my Iphone TomTom for navigation and have it on the idrive screen. Also the splitscreen is perfect to keep an eye on your lockscreen for incomming messages/notifications. Also for watching videos / showing fotos and other fun stuff :-)

Apple need to update their BT profile to allow message push over BT. That would fix that problem with today's technology. Similarly bmw could implement email support the same way they did with blackberry, again it requires updates from apple.

Just mirroring the iPhone screen on the CID provides zero value unless you also implement control .... You shouldn't look down at a handset to control a car screen .... And the apps themseleves need to be automotive grade ... Meaning that the time to interpret the information on the screen and interact with it, has to be close to zero.

Confirmed with BMW at the M6 press drive earlier this week that the U.S. 2013 F30 won't be getting the updated navigation.

I guess bad news for those who were aiming for the 2013 version but good news for those who got the 2012 F30 already.
