How does it know the keys are in the car?
Just curious on a technical level. I would think the key fob has a spherical range, period. But somehow, with comfort access, it won't let you lock the door with the keys in the car.
This is kind of cool, but how do you think it does this? (I'm only explaining the following for those who'll want to know why the hell I would even know this: I carry a duffel bag with me to work. The keys are huge, so I just keep them in the bag. I throw the bag in the back seat. I have auto-lock enabled. When I get to work I keep forgetting to hit unlock before I get out of the car. My Lexus would unlock all doors if you touched the rear door handles. With this car, the only way to unlock them is to lean back into the car, phone and other stuff in-hand, and hit the button on the dash. I have the setting that CA unlocks all doors. I figured if I would just touch the front door handle to lock, then unlock, problem solved... But the car won't lock with the keys in the bag.) |

Thanks claykin, great document! Damn, there are antennas all over the car. I guess it's more sophisticated than I imagined.
I just wish there were "capacitive sensors" in the rear door handles too, to help me with my forgetfulness. |

I just learned you can steal most any CA BMW if you are a passenger in the car. Say your buddy owns the car and is the driver. You are in the passenger seat. Your buddy stops at 7/11, turns off the engine, and takes the Comfort Access key and goes into the store. Just jump in the drivers seat within ten seconds while your buddy walks into the store and you can restart the beast without the key!!!! Or just put your foot on the brake from the passenger seat and press the start button within ten seconds. Then wait 60 more seconds whilst your buddy disappears into the store and jump into the drivers seat and swipe his car! 10 seconds is a lot of time and it is an eternity in a football game! |

You should actually only have to grab the front handle to unlock all the doors, you don't need to lock the doors then unlock them. However, I am not sure if you can unlock the doors with the keys in the car either.
