Heated Seats

Our old E90 328 xdrive had the heated seats and they would be toasty warm after about 1 minute. I always thought that those seat warmers were the quickest I have every experienced. I assumed it was a BMW thing.

The new 2013 335 xdrive has heated seats too. These take about 4-5 minutes to feel toasty warm.

What is everyone else's experience with the seat heaters in the F30. Is this the new standard or is it possible that there is an issue with mine?

I realize that life must be rough if I am inquiring about seat heaters but am just trying to determine if there is an issue or not. If it matters, the E90 had leatherette and the F30 has leather.

Admittedly I've only tried mine out on a couple of occasions but each of those times they did seem to take a good few minutes before they really got going. Once they did though, they were very hot and I seemed to be having to turn them down.

My wife's Ford has heated seats too and they're hot within a minute. I had wondered if mine had a problem too based upon this difference but it sounds like either we're both unlucky with our seats or this really is the norm.

Mine seem to be warm about as fast as my wife's e90. i think her seat gets warm a little quicker and my backrest gets warm a little quicker. there might be a little difference but not more than 30 seconds or so in my experience.

My MY06 E90 330i's seats were hot before I got to the bottom of my 50' driveway. Not so in the F30. It takes far too long for them to heat up.

That's the bad news.

The good news is the heated steering wheel (unavailable in my E90) heats up in 30 seconds.

I think the temperature of the seat surface greatly influences the amount of time the seats heat up.

If they are really cold then it heats up right quick. If the seats are not too cold then it takes longer.

Blame this on our Nanny State.

BMW had a problem once where the 7 series seat heaters would catch fire.

So, now. BMW is doubly cautious.

Look, I went out to buy an electric heating pad. OMG!!! The piece of crap has so many safety features it is useless. First, it only stays on hot for 15 minutes. Next, you can't reset it (turn it back on) more than 5 times without unplugging it.

What a joke.

It seems to be taking much longer to warm up. I wasn't sure if it was the heating system still being new.

I can feel the warmth from my heated seats at about the same time that the left exhaust pipe opens up, maybe 30-45 seconds. The heated steering wheel is even quicker, maybe 15-30 seconds before its noticeable. I have the cold weather package.

do you have the heated seats as a standalone option or as a part of the cold weather package?

My seats usually take about 2 minutes to warm up and 3 or so to get scalding hot with an ambient outside temperature of around 40°F. They still get much hotter much quicker than any car I've owned with heated seats previously (Acura, Nissan)

Keep in mind the seat time to warm up is most likely going to depend on a whole lot of factors...how cold was the foam in the seat to begin with, how much juice is coming out of the alternator, how fat your rear end is, etc.

I also feel it takes to long to heat up compared to any of the other BMW's I've owned. Now the steering wheel is great it doesn't take long a all to get warm.

Takes about a minute to feel it getting warm and about 3 to make me turn it down/off. Not sure what to complain about there, other than even at the lowest setting, it's a bit too warm for me so I turn if off after <10 mins.

But then again the heater is too warm for me after about 10 mins even set at 72 degrees and the lowest fan. It's only been in the low 40's/high 30's in the mornings recently though.

My '13 F30 is my first BMW, and my first car with lots of cool modern technology features (my old car was an '03 Dodge Stratus MT).

My heated seat takes a few minutes. Honestly, I'm underwhelmed with it (I also got it as a standalone without the cold weather package and heated steering wheel FWIW). It takes a long time to warm up, at which point the vents are sufficiently warmed up to not really need the seat. Plus, once it's fully warmed up, it's HOT, and so I basically have to reduce it to 1 bar anyway.

Next time I'm in the market for a car, if I'm at the point of trying to trim costs, heated seats are probably one of the first things that will get ditched.

I have just the opposite experience than almost everybody else here.

In my MY2013 F30 the seats warm up much quicker than in my previous MY2006 E90. It's probably within about 2 min cozy warm in the F30 where the E90 took about 4 min.

Clearly the heated seats in my E90 was quicker than the ones in my F30. But the Steering Wheels gets warm in literally seconds.

I think the seats need to be "broken in" too?

Seats (and steering wheel) toasty within a minute. About the same as my prior E90's.

I quite agree. Can't say I've noticed any diff between the E90 & F30.
However, the rear seat heating, my Wife likes very much as she believes it seems to heat the seat backs.
It does tend to keep the 'rear seat passenger' nice and quite like!

I rarely use heated seats, but those in the F30 are slow to respond. The heated wheel is quicker.

Heated wheel is really nice. There were many times in my other car where I would be running the heat, heated seats, and my fingers would still be cold.
