Newbie Question: 225 40R 18 Compatible?
Hi,
Newbie here. I just purchased a 2018 i430 Xdrive Grand Coupe with M Sport Package. As the car comes with performance tires, I need to get winter tires. I found an awesome deal on 225 40R 18, but specs show I should be using 225 45R 18. Will this be an issue, or should I be ok with the 225 40R 18? Thx! |

I don't recommend 225/40-18.
Those tires are 3.5% shorter than OEM size and results in increased fender gap, less wheel protection, reduced comfort and a speedo that is even more off than with OEM tires. |

It works height wise, but width will be tight on stock wheels in the front. Those tires are 1” wider -30mm- so call it 1/2” on either side of the wheel in width.
What wheels are you going to run these on? An 8.5” or 9” wheel is a better fit for a 255 tire, but will be an issue in the front. You are better off with a 225/45-18 all around. Sorry |

Where winter tires are concerned don't go wider, as you end up with less traction. It's counter-intuitive, but true.
