Thoughts on Snapper Rocks blue 4 Gran coupe
It's been several months deciding whether to order a 3 touring or a 4 gran coupe. Initially I was set on a 3 touring and everything was awaiting final go for the order. Configured with everything I needed (not fully loaded) in San Marino blue and Saddle brown leather.
Now the 4 Gran coupe LCI was introduced, interests have changed. This and the extra conditions with our Brussels Autoshow reductions made this an easy choice. Now for the difficult part.. I was set on going for a Carbon black GC with saddle brown leather, but the new Snapper Rocks blue is giving me a hard time to decide between these 2 colors. Given that I'm closing to my 30th anniversary next year, my wife thinks this is no longer something for an adult with 2 kids. She also thinks this a more feminine color, but having seen multiple X6M's and X5M's with LLB/Aragong combo this is a great option! The Carbon black is the safer, classy choice but the blue is more vivid and not 'black/grey' car n° 1000 on the parking lot. What are your thoughts on this new color? Here are also 2 pictures of how I'd spec the cars. Last edited by Dawko; 01-20-2017 at 01:08 AM.. |

The computerized images really won't do the true hues of the paint justice. Especially because your monitor lights the images from behind there can be quite a bit of distortion. I would really recommend (and what I would do myself) is waiting until there are abundant samples of this paint color or models you can view in person before making such an important decision.

San Marino Blue was available as a special order car for the previous 3 series touring model? You are very fortunate - it's not available in the US. I think San Marino Blue - if available on the 4 series vehicle you are now interested in - is a better color. My local BMW dealer had M6 coupe in San Marino Blue. It was stunning.

My vote is for Carbon Black. I love how you can only see the blue hues in certain lighting conditions, and feel the contrast with your chosen interior works very well.

The blue will show the lines/curves of the GC whereas the black won't. Simple choice if you ask me... why would you want a GC otherwise?
Snapper Rocks looks lovely; would get it over EBII if I had the choice over a year ago.

I'm not liking this new blue. But I'll make a final judgement when I see it in person

You might want to look into Imperial blue Xirallic, not metallic, as it also has the extra color changing effects with light like tanzanite. Carbonschwarz is very nice, it's never wrong, but it does hide the contours of the car. I changed my order from carbonschwarz to champagner quarz, lighter colors do compliment the body lines of the F36. Not sure on the snapper rocks though, somehow the F36 looks better with traditional or luxury looking colors, instead of overly sporty ones. I never liked the turquoise hyundai excels either ;-)

not sure what colors are available in BE
in general, blacks and dark colors are difficult to upkeep. blacks and dark colors show scratches, swirls and dirt and get very hot in the sun. you will need a lot of time and resources to keep it looking nice and clean. for the blacks, i'd rather have Jet Black (1st), Black Sapphire Metallic (2nd), Carbon (3rd) i don't care for the turquoise/aqua in the snapper rocks blue. estoril blue II is much nicer. my opinion is biased since that is what i have, though ^^ any other choices you're considering? |

I also live in BE and went for EBII vs a dark/neutral color without hesitation (well, my previous F30 was EBII is the US too...). Streets are full of dark color bimmers, make a statement and order the Snapper Rocks Blue. If you are a petrolhead, you like your car to stand out of the crowd and want something with a sporty look, this is the obvious choice.
BTW, I am 47 with 4 kids and my choice of color was not the result of a mid-life crisis Tell your wife you can still get a black car when you retire

Thanks for the reactions everyone. These are the only options suitable to have without spending the extra €/$ on a special request. I'd rather have a little more enjoyable, useful options than downgrading to a lower engine model to compensate for individual colors (which was the case for the SMB touring).
CB is the only decent color to my taste in the available palette, but keeping it constantly clean would be a pita. I don't have (rather make) enough time to clean it more than once a week.. And it's only in clean shape that it has all it's beauty. Yours was the one that seduced me to CB/SB thanks for that.. I have ordered a paint sample to examen closer this new blue, be it a scratch lacquer 'stift'. If it's anything close/similar to LBB, I'm sold. |

My vote goes with Carbon Black. While I do like the blue colour, the problem I have is that I don't know if I could live with that blue everyday.
Black never goes out of fashion. |

I voted Snapper Rocks Blue, but I always like bright blues and this one is unique since it has green in it. I like the fact that it is lighter and brighter than my EBII...Here is a pic for all those that haven't seen the color...stunning. You can always buy a black BMW, colors like this are few and far between. Stand out from the crowd.

What about a euro delivery, there isnt a chance to treat the paint upon delivery, does that matter a lot? |

Alright, here it goes
This is the regimen I performed on my car upon delivery, not saying this is the best approach but it is tried and tested. 1. Wash the car thoroughly using Adams Strip Wash to ensure any polishes or wax or anything applied to the paint from factory comes out. 2. Use something like Iron Out to remove any contamination in the paint. 3. Use a clay bar and some detail spray and clay the entire car. A good example of detail spray is Adams Detail Spray 4. Use a Dual Action polisher or similar and a correction compound of choice to correct the paint and reduce/take out any swirls in the paint. I personally use Meguiars Ultimate Compound. If you are not comfortable with this step, rather skip it and hand it over to a professional detailer. After these basic steps are carried out, I then followed up with the AMMO NYC regimen. 5. Apply AMMO Reflex Foundation Coat. This will be the base protective layer protecting the paint. I did two layers. Already now the paint will start to look really good. 6. I then followed up with AMMO Skin Defense Coat. This is the top layer protection and provides a very nice shine and depth to the paint. 7. Last step is applying AMMO Creme Reflective Paste which is a carnauba wax that really finishes off with an amazing shine and depth (concourse quality). This may sound like a lot, but effectively you will now just maintain this over time. A couple of times per year you may need to reapply some of the AMMO Skin but other than that, just use AMMO Hydrate as a drying agent when you wash the car and then apply som Creme when you want to hit that extra shine. I hope this helps

wow that's a lot, I think I would feel more comfortable getting a professional do the first treatment and then just do the maintenance myself. Thanks for the list, I'll show it to a detailer to see if what they do compares.

I know this is off topic but I thought I'd ask since you seem like you know a bit about detailing. Why do you do wax over a ceramic coating like CQuartz/OptiCoat/etc.?

Hi,
Only for the final finish. Ceramic coatings or sealants just doesn't provide the same depth and shine. Some of the ceramic coatings also has a tendency to look "synthetic". Now this is only my opinion and I have not used CQuarts or OptiCoat either or applied wax to them. In my case I use products that complements each other well and are part of a regimen. Make sure that you only combine products that complements each other well, always check with the manufacturer.

Time for an update. Went to the dealership earlier this week to try and finalise things. They had a sample of Snapper Rocks blue and it's very clear this will be my definitive choice!
Just as LBB it's very defficult to capture the color. |
