Yeah. Performance wise, they are no different. They are the same engine, N26 just has some extra "goodies" (goodies for the EPA) on it.

I knew they were 98% the same engine, but I'm surprised the N20 doesn't make any more power in stock form, having one less cat and therefore a less restrictive exhaust than the N20.

DINAN found they did, when they were testing the N26 for their DINAN stage 1 tune. Seems like N26 loses power up top vs N20. Not by alot but some due to 2nd cat.

DINAN's N20 and N26 tunes are different BUT they are made to be CARB legal etc etc so im sure they are having to dial things back with the N26 to make everyone happy.

1. Difference between the N20 and N26?
--- The N26 is simply the emissions queen of the N20 (SULEV). What does this mean? Well, the N26 has a secondary catalytic converter located just after the downpipe/stock cat. The N26 also has hand selected injectors that have the lowest leakage rate/possibility. It also has a vacuum line that runs from the PCV (located on the top of the engine) to the intake pipe. N20 just vents that air to the atmosphere. There are a few more things, like metal pipes where the N20 has rubber pipes, and so on, but the engines themselves are no different.

2. Maps on BM3 for N20?
--- I'll first start by saying that BM3 will not lead you astray and give you access to a tune that's not for your car. Entering your VIN prevents that, on top of the fact that different tunes have different writing parameters that would be incompatible with your DME.

As for the tunes themselves. N20/6 tunes will appear up to four different ways: N20-PWG-L, N20-PWG-H, N20-EWG-L, and N20-EWG-H. Now again, the N20 and N26 are the same engines with the same parameters and so on. This is why it's labeled as N20, because there is no difference. Your PWG and EWG will be Pneumatic Wastegate and Electric WG. If you're 2013+, you'll have EWG and if you have an N26, you're always EWG. Lastly, the L and H. L means "Low Compression" which means the map is for a 328i. It has a lower compression (10:1) to that of the 320i, which has an 11:1 compression ratio. Thus, the 320i will be the maps that have "H" for "High Compression".

Hopefully that helps you both.

If I was to upgrade my downpipe would that eliminate the 2nd cat or would that have to be something I do one my own?

Getting a downpipe on the N26 removes the more restrictive 'primary' cat that is located in the stock downpipe. The secondary cat is further down the exhaust system, and can be removed by getting a mid-pipe, like the one AWE offers: https://www.awe-tuning.com/awe-bmw-f...ance-mid-pipes.

Ah yes. I have the AWE mid-pipe with my AWE exhaust. So 2nd cat deleted...

By the way, I flashed my car about an hour ago and drove for about 30 mins.

First impressions: Car has great power through all shift ranges. It feels stronger at take off and there's a constant power that feels that's always there. Not like the stock tune where the car seems a bit "jerky" at times. When you floor it...The car feels really strong and seems to accelerate with ease. Looks like I'm topping out at about 5.5 - 6K before shifting in and around 4th or 5th gear when flooring it.

Things I didn't like:

I still feel like when settling at a cruising speed of around 65 mph in the 2-3K range the car feels like it's not as strong. I wonder what's causing this if anything?

I lost my burbles and pops that I use to have with my stock tune. Weird...(Maybe this can be fixed with a requested tune?)

Curious... Is this the 1st turbo car you have owned? I ask because maybe its the slight turbo lag you are feeling?
When you say cruising speed...are you in sport? Throttle %?

For sure run logs when you get the chance so you can figure out how your car is really running.

Oh, should've saw that in your signature. Then you're good! 2nd cat already gone.

Glad you're liking the tune. I still can't really tell whether or not you are having a problem though, with the car feeling slow in the 2-3k range. I found that BM3 really beefed up that part of the powerband. Maybe it's just our difference in opinions, or maybe you're having an issue. Definitely run some logs for us. I'm no expert log reader at all, but it certainly will help determine if you have a problem or not.

Yes. My first turbo car. Doesn't really feel like lag. Maybe I have an exhaust leak?

I'm going to try to run some datalogs in a few hours once the traffic clears up in my town. If I can figure it out ...(newb) I'll do a few hard pulls and a few at normal cruising speeds. Maybe this will give us some results and answers?

You would hear if it was an exhaust leak, and I don't think you would notice any power loss with an exhaust leak anyway. I would consider that highly unlikely. What's more likely is a vacuum or boost leak, but to be honest I don't think you're having an issue there either considering you're hitting 19psi just fine on the logs.

Preface: don't take my word as bible, I am not an expert. From what I can glean, everything looks ok on these logs. However, a WOT log would be more helpful for us to determine if there is a real issue with the car. These types of logs are good for capturing a specific issue like you were, but generally, it's good to have at least one WOT log accompanying them.

I just ran a WOT on the highway but I can't access the link because the BM3 server is down for maintenance. From what I can see I'm hitting around 19-20psi of boost when punching it and everything else looks pretty clean. Maybe it's turbo lag that I'm experiencing? Overall I'm VERY happy with this tune.

I'll post the link when the server is back up.
