Discovered something new today

The car dinged at me and told me it's 37F outside.

Us residents of the Northern states are very familiar with this function...

Ahh, you folks down in Texas don't see that much, eh? So did it startle you when it dinged and the dash lit up? It still does to me around this time of year when the temps fluctuate around that temp.

The ice warning (bong & flashing display) goes back much further, had it in my 1998 E39.

Great feature for driving in the Highlands of Scotland. We have road signs with a "road liable to icing" warning.

Yes, as I recall I believe it was also in my previous E46 cars too. I've never understood why it went of at 37 degrees instead of something closer to freezing, although I suppose it may have something to do with available grip from the tires diminishing from the colder temps reducing tire pressure.

Roads can be ice with air temperatures above freezing... I believe the warning is pitched where it should be.

Interesting how BMW put an additional warning in the E39 user manual.

Quote:
The ice warning does not alter the fact that surface ice can form at tmperatures above +37.5 F (+3 C), on bridges or shaded road surfaces, for instance.

It always makes my heart skip a beat, since it's the same chime as a TPMS warning or drivetrain malfunction or other scary situation.

Mine has done that 3x this week. And I live in San Diego! WTF! I moved from Chicago to get away from this!

+1. Ice storms occur when the upper air temperature is above freezing, so that precipitation falls as rain, while the ground and objects are at or below freezing, so the rain freezes when it hits. Snow and sleet occurs when the upper air temperatures are below freezing, so it falls as snow or sleet, while both low level air and ground temperatures may be well above freezing.

I know this has been discussed but what is the reasoning around that particular temperature alert? It's not like 37 degrees has any significance other than being 5 degrees above freezing?

For me, the 37* warning is good because I park in my garage. It takes a few minutes for the temp gauge to get to the actual outside temp. So if it's 30* out, I'll get a warning sooner, as the gauge is going down from my garage temp to the actual outside temp.

I believe the 37 F warning is proabably 2 fold;
  1. provides a "heads up" that freezing temps are approaching, and
  2. Bridges and overpasses can freeze when the air temp is above 32 if sufficent wind is present causing a windchill temp of 32 and below.

Whatever the reason, for those of us not living in colder climates, it's an indicator that you're going to have a less-than-optimal drive or day.

It's sunny and not a cloud in the sky. I thought it was because the tires deflated a bit due to the cold. But yeah..it will be 80F by 4pm.

Typical, sporadic, Texas weather. I've had my car for just over a year, but haven't gotten that warning yet. Although, we do get around/below freezing very occasionally in the winter. We even had snow once, 11 years ago, and we live on the beach! First and only time I've ever seen the white blanket.

I remember that, all of my clients down there were freaking out and skipping work! - OP, you forgot to mention the pretty snowflake the car shows :P

That feature goes back farther than that; my 03 M3 lets me know when it is cold out.

I've never since this on any of the F series cars I have owned.

Should I take it back to the dealer, maybe it's the oil type or RON fuel I use.
