So I drive a 2013 F30 328i. When my car starts (ASS) the whole car actually shakes, and I have had multiple passengers, including passengers sitting in the back seat say "is your engine starting again everytime you stop? because i can feel it, its really rough"
This is from people who don't even care about cars which I believe says a lot. Anyways, my car is now in the dealership to get the ASS recode and some other small issues looked at, and I have a loaner 2014 328i Gran Tourismo. Has anyone here who has rough ASS tried a 2014 F30? This car (2014 328i GT) is rediculously smoother. I am afraid that the 2012 and 2013 F30's got the previous revision, and the newer revision to the ASS, released on the 2014 models, (unless this is specific to the Gran Tourismo, although I am guessing this is not the case) is a lot better. I am going to test drive some other cars from the nearby bmw dealership to see how their ass feels compared to my 2013's ASS. The 2014 328i Gran Tourismo is so much smoother, I had someone who doesn't care or know anything about cars (my mom) drive it, and she couldn't tell the engine was turning on and off. I wish I could get my 2013 328's ASS to be like this car's ASS. Last edited by rentien; 11-02-2014 at 01:38 AM.. |

The ASS in my 2015 335 M sport is very smooth, ASS is so much better with a manual tranny because you can control when it comes on or off by letting out the clutch with the stick in neutral. I had a 2013 auto 328 as a loan and the ASS was very rough..

ASS absolutely sucks, minimal fuel saving with added complexity to an already complex system...not to mention working the starter and battery to death. I would disable it permanently if I had it in my car.

I must say I don't find it a problem in my 320. It's smooth, minor shudder with AC as mentioned but had no stalls and it's fast enough 99% of the time to allow me to do my thing in traffic.
As for its actual usefulness I don't know, but I would rather do something about Eco pro which remaps your accelerator pedal from normal or irritating. |

What year is your 320i? I suspect 2014 and on have improved ASS as opposed to 2012 and 2013 F30's...

Is anyone else worried that the starting and stopping is harder on the motor than letting it idle?
I turned ASS off I'm not being too hard on the motor during break in. |

i have no issues with mine. I'm used to it enough to know to disable it by shifting into sport when I want to. Did shut the car off at a bad time the other day when I was trying to make a left turn in traffic and I wasnt paying attention. Other than that its smooth enough on mine, could it be better? Sure but it other then shutting off at the occasional inopportune time I'm fine with it.
Hell best thing they could do would be to put a deactivate switch on the gear selector so you could deactivate it a bit easier.

I like my ASS
To be honest, i like my ASS (no not my ass, the ass in the car lol) it starts up pretty smoothly and quickly, i do not notice at all that the car shakes and trembles.. Idk if its just in my 640 GC or in all Bimmers.. Aren't they supposed to have the same System?

I *think* this is because the prius has an electric motor that drives the wheels. So the engine starts when you're underway, making the feel much smoother. |

This. ASS should not be compared to a Prius. One of the Active Hybrid 3's can be compared to a Prius, but nothing else.

Even in the Activehybrid3 I would feel the ASS system working about 25% of the time (i.e. minor shake)...my 2014 328d is definetely not the smoothest but its just not something I've even been bothered by and it otherwise works quite well.

As for ASS it's not there just to save fuel but cut emissions. While not as good as Mercedes or GM in terms of smoothness I don't notice the shutter as much after a year of living with. I expect it will get better over time. As echoed by others problems include shutting down the engine when moving very slowly (ie when parking) and 'surging' a potentially more dangerous problem where the car leaps forward when too much throttle is applied on ASS wake up. On a 320 it's a problem. On an m3 or 335 it's going to be pretty damn unnerving but i guess you just get used to it and learn to control it like anything else. Like or hate it I estimate by the end of 2016 most cars will have it. Even cheapy cars have keyless ignition these days so start stop is a software upgrade or two away.
