true that. and alpina's these days aren't exactly what you would call extreme cars. however, they are very capable cruisers and autobahn stormers. does witchcraft to the bmw engines while making them more comfortable and feel higher quality. However, I am more excited about the Alpina D3.

Sorry, I have no idea why I read peak power at 1500rpm. I got C's in reading comprehension

In the UK the pricing of the B3 is very similar to the M3 and it sells! Agreed in small numbers, however this is one of many USP's of owning an Alpina. The B3 and M3 are very different cars, they are for very different customers and do not really compete against each other.

In the UK the M3 could be even cheaper than buying a brand new B3 as there is no discount on the price. May be when one gets older (40+) you start to realise the benefits of owning an Alpina.

Such as owning an M3 and being 50+ I start to think midlife crisis

I would take an Alpina over an "M" car any day, as a matter of personal preference. If I wanted a sports car, I would buy one. An M3 is not a sports car - it is a GT car with sporting intentions. Nothing wrong with that; it's an excellent bit of kit. However, the Alpina plays its role better than the "M" - it does not pretend to be a sports car. It is a proper form of a gentleman's sporting GT and embraces that role, whereas the "M" plays up the sporting element more.

In fact, I like the concept so much that I inquired about purchasing an Alpina here in Toronto when I was picking up my car after servicing it at the dealer, but apparently no dice in Canada. That is a shame...

Updated with newly released specs (2/27/13):

The new B3 Bi-Turbo delivers 410 HP (301 kW) starting at 5500 RPM (compared to the US F30 335i with 300 HP) and 442 lb-ft (600Nm) torque.

0-100kmh (0-62 mph) takes 4.2 seconds.

The F80 may not be heavier (although, it might) than a 335i, it will have a diff, and maybe bigger/heavier brakes and wheels to eat away at mpg compared to a 335i. And it will probably have the 7-speed DCT, where the 335i often has the 8HP which helps out its highway mpg.

I realize this is all speculation, but I just don't see an F80 even matching a 335i for mpg. Just compare a 550i F10 to a M5. No doubt the F80 mpg will be better than the E9x M3, but it will still be a hard argument to make that it will be an economical daily driver. Heck, it just cost me $50 to fill up my AH3 yesterday, and I wasn't too happy about that
I'm thinking Tesla and hopefully a few more like it soon is the way to go...

I think the weight was the issue not the engine. I doubt we will see the B3 since BMW does not want to risk losing sales to the new M3. Alpina does not have the dealer network to do it alone in the US.
You might be right about that but that would mean this b3 would destroy a current M3 rated at 4.4 0-60!

Less than 4 seconds just seams wishfull but the TT N55 might prove me wrong.

What would the next M3/M4 be capable of I wonder?
I own both an e92 m3 and an Alpina b3 Biturbo. When both were stock, the Alpina had only an afe dual intake and it edges one car length on the m3. Now both are full bolt ons and tuned, no competition for the m3. So this new one will no doubt be a serious machine with similar mods on my alpina( downpipes, FMIC, intake and tune )

I can imagine that building a network with dealerships and going through the certifications for selling them in the US wouldn't be a small deal.

It could sell well if marketed properly in the right regions, but they are unknown here and don't have the brand recognition they already have in Europe.

Here in the GTA, they sell B7's so they're already connected to dealerships even if to a small degree. I think they should do a limited run or ship a limited amount of cars because I know there are many people who would be very interested in getting a B3 rather than a M3.

Not a guess. You can see the part numbers linked below to RealOEM.com

The standard 3-series (along with other BMW N20/N55 vehicles) uses the GA8HP45Z which is rated to 450nm (331lb-ft)

Other BMWs which uses the heavy duty version are the ActiveHybrid 3/5/7 (technically the GA8P70H) and 550i/650i750i, the GA8HP70Z. Those GA8P70 modes are rated to handle 700nm (516lb-ft) of torque.

More like an educated guess. Go to ZFs website and you will see that the only make one 8 speed gearbox (HP8), however they make different variants of that same basic design to accommodate the extra power. So hardware wise it will actually be the pretty much the same as in the 550i. Bear in mind they could change the ratios.
