Parking sensors, braking
Hi,
I have a 2016 3 series model with the parking sensors and reverse camera, and whenever the distance between the car and the rear wall gets below around 15 cm the gear switches from R (reverse) to P (parking). Anyone else encountered this? Is there a way to override this feature? Thank you! |

Does your car happen to have the Parking Assistant?
I know for 2016, they updated it to include Auto PDC within the Parking Assistant, where it'll call up the Front PDC if you get close to an object without pressing the PDC button. They possibly also rolled in Active PDC to brake the car if it is approaching an object quite closely. Though I am curious how the new Parking Assistant works. With 15 and prior, its manual braking, accelerating and gear changes. It's possible for LCI models, it works like the X5 where you just hold the PDC button and it'll do all the work with auto braking, accelerating and gear changes. |

I have no clue. Just out of curiosity, are you sure the engine isn't just turning off when you're close and therefore driving slowly? Sometimes in my car if I'm driving very slowly, because I'm close to something, the Auto Start Stop kicks in and turns the engine off. Can be kind of annoying sometimes.

Mine will do the same thing on occasion, but not due to distance from the rear wall. There's a water channel on my garage floor at the entrance. If I have the car too close to the side wall of the garage and the front wheels are in the channel it will pop into park before I can back all the way in. I have to pull forward and move it away from the side wall an inch or two and then it will back all the way in. I don't know what would happen if I tried to back it closer than six inches from the rear wall, I have my constant warning tone set for twelve inches and have never tried going closer.

I don't remember how small the interval can be set for when the warning tone goes from a repeating beep to a constant tone, but if you must park within 15cm then I'd try setting it to that distance.

15cm is a ton. 5.9" for people who can't speak metric. But my big question regards the car going into Park while still moving. That can cause serious transmission problems. Please say it applies the brakes.

I have mine set at 12" to allow some room for overshoot. Mine only slips into park when in reverse, and only when the car is barely moving, as when slowly inching it into my small garage.

Yes there is a setting that activates automatically if you slowly creep up to something. It can be disabled (at least in my x5). |
