With better looking wheels and a drop the car would look good, better than it is

I think it looks pretty good except from the side profile shot. The F32 kind of stretches the hood slope to the max and the gran coupe takes it a little too far. It's still sexy as hell though.

Yeah, it's the damn pedestrian protection regulations. And what I'm taking from it is this: We're fine with hitting pedestrians and we have zero intention on getting to the source of the problem. We just want to make it more comfortable for the people being run over.

This is like lowering the educational standards so that more people graduate when they shouldn't..for the sake of numbers looking good on a spread sheet. It's the gradual, downward spiral of civilization.

End rant.

To me the a4 and the a5 sportback looks similar, from the rear you can confuse the 2 and even the front resemble the same car. The profile is very different tought.

The 4GC is fairly different from the 3er from every angle, only the front lights have a similar look

Both the 4GT and the 4GC will have a hatch(opening).

On the 4GT it is more of a pronounced hatch, like on the 5er GT. Hence all the camo on the rear of the test cars.

...

While the 4GC has a hatch... the roof line is more arched or curved than in the 4GT and the trunk is more stubby, than the 4GT.

Wait a minute - 4GT? You're kidding, right? A third hatchback model? I disbelieve. I just can't see how that makes any sense at all. If that's actually the case then I will wonder if the product planners really are going mad.

At any rate, yes, certainly there will be some aesthetic differences between the 3GT and the new 4GC. It still leaves the lineup without a four door coupe and with two hatchbacks where it seems one could suffice.

I think it's going to look pretty good. But I'd pay $100k for a 6GC waaaaaay before I paid $70k for this thing. The 6GC is just gorgeous, especially in the flesh.

Sorry(late night last night)... yes, I meant 3GT and the 4GC, will both have hatches. Just on the 3GT is more pronounced while the 4GC is more sleeker(hatch).

I think BMW is trying to take a page from VW Group, in offering MANY types of cars on the same platform. Just look at all the Golf derivatives(Audi TT, Seat Leon, Golf & Golf Plus, etc).

Sure, and certainly building multiple models on one platform is nothing new for BMW either although they are expanding the number with the new GT and GC offerings. Still, if we look just at the VW examples you cite (talking about multiple brands clouds the issue), the Golf and Golf Plus are distinguished in that the former is a standard compact car while the latter is a compact MPV. So, if the 3GT were an MPV along the lines of an SMAX I could understand the 4GC as the standard hatchback entry. But it's not the case. Instead what we have is more like if there were both a Golf and a Bora hatchback which I'll bet would cause lots of confusion over there on your side of the pond.

Doesn't make any sense unless they are building two different versions, one for NA and one for the ROW.

They didn't bring the M135i to the states because of hardly any demand for a hatchback and now those of us who were wanting a smaller, cheaper version of the 6GC have to settle for some low rent hatchback?

3/5/7, z4, x5, M3, M5

remember when this was the line up and all the vehicles had good quality and amazing driving characteristics?

oh yea and they didn't drive like a Hyundai and feel cheaper then a Chevy?!

1/2/2GC/3/3GT/4/4GC/5/5GT/6/6GC/7/x1/x3/x5/x6/z4/i3/i8/M3/M4/M5/M6/M6GC/Mx5/Mx6
I'm sure I am missing about 15 other models, I think they have gone and lost my enthusiasm to keep buying new models.

Don't care what CAR thinks, every BMW forum is claiming the GC will have something "hatch-like".

That's because it is longer.
It rides on the 3 Series GT wheelbase of 180 mm.
Roughly about 7 inches more wheelbase than the F30.

In other words, if the 4GC turns out to be a hatchback (which is how it appears now), making it the real A5 Sportback competitor, then what purpose does the 3GT serve? I suppose one could ask the same about a 5 sedan vs. a 6 GC, but to me once you add the 5th door in the mix it really kills the coupe vs. sedan styling rationale that separates those two cars. Plus it just seems strange that the 3/4 will have two five-doors and one four-door, while the 5/6 will have two four-doors and one five-door.
This is not the case.

The 3 GT is bigger and much more spacious than the A5 Sportback, which you may only notice after giving them a closer look.

The 4GC will be its competitor with a more 'coupe-esque' design and compromise on space that comes with it. The priority here is form, over function.

I also don't really see the point of the hatchback discussion. Outside of the US, and specifically in Europe, 'hatchback' doesn't have a negative connotation.

German 'Auto Motor und Sport' writes that the 4 GC will have the regular (short) wheelbase from the sedan. This is in contrast to what was rumored before, but makes more sense IMO.
