The insurance guy is using a technicality to lie to you.

The technical term is not a frame, it is the rails in the unit body that would be bent. I would take it to another shop that is well respected and get their input. They'll need to put it on a lift and take a look, may even charge $100. First though, take it back to the shop that did the repair, tell them the issue, and make them go over it with you while it's in the air.

It could be the new tires that are tramlining, but I doubt it.

In regards to your car?

100% impossible that you have frame damage. Your car #1 doesn’t have a frame. Its unibody. Its made in sections and those sections are made to be cut out or unbolted and replaced.

This guys makes valid points about the technology but unibody structural damage (old term frame damage) is an everyday occurrence. If every car with structural damage was “scrapped” and unrepairable there would be no new cars available b/c every day people would be replacing the cars due to accidents. However, with your car there is no way possible to have received unibody damage from that minor of an accident. The car can be “measured” in a matter of 4 hours on the same “bench” that bmw uses when they build the cars. I have 3 of those and it will tell within 1 millimeter tolerance that the car is straight.

**just for peace of mind**
#1 - BULL SHIT! Your unit body is NEVER intended to be cut apart! Are you shitting me? HELL NO! There are subframe components that can be replaced by unbolting, and if any have been damaged and replaced, you have a right to know.

#2 - The unibody / unit body is very strong in some ways, but the way you were hit in the rear - that is the weakest point of th car, and the easiest way to bend the "unit body". In the factory we called it a frame, call it what you want. He clearly knows what I am talking about.

If the unitbody is straight, and he truly has one of the jigs, he should be able to set it back on the jig. The guide pins should all align perfectly, or within 1mm. Anything more and you have a frame (sorry, unit body) out of allignment.

He's right about structural damage- the reason we all run Carfax reports, and the reason a car depreciates in value after a big wreck, is this kind of damage is frequently hidden from unsuspecting owners.

I would ask them, if the car really does have structural damage, are you willing to gurantee my safety in regard to the integrity of the body in a future accident? Get the response in writing. They're stupid if they agree to this, becuase the integrity of the body is a critical component in the safety system of your car. It doesnt take much of an impact at that angle to bend the unit body. And all it takes is a few broken welds, a seam or two with cracked sealer, and that will be a probelm car.

Make them prove the damage is not done. You've paid for it in your insurance premium, accept no excuses.

tramlining is a term that generally means the car is not tracking straight. It usually means the car is following ruts in the road, kinda like a street car, trolley or tram. Another similar problem is called dogtracking, and it feels like tramlining. Dogtracking is where the front and rear wheels are not in line, or are side shifted relative to where they are supposed to be. Happens all the time in side impact accidents. Can also occur during production, but quality control should catch it before the car ever gets painted.

It's called dogtracking, because if you ever watch a lot of dogs walk (esp big ones, like a rot), they shift their hips to one side so their front and back legs don't line up.

well i undestand what dogtracking is. but i didnt know what tramlining meant. thanks though. ya i got hit in the rear and it was minor and i was parked. i just needed a new bumper, taillight and trunk but my car pulls to the left now and thats the side it got hit on. Im hoping its not from Rail damage and all that. it wasnt that bad for there to be anytype of action like this but i guess it can happen

It doesn't take much of a side impact to induce dogtrack. The number 2 cause of dogtracking in the factory is assembly line collisions, and the line only moves at maybe 2 mph. The rails are designed for axial strength, not lateral. There are no rails running the width of the car. That would be an interesting design / production challenge.

Number 1 cause is subframe mis-match, where the rear sub comp is not set in the right place before being welded. You'd think it could never happen......it does!
