My mom did this once. No seat belt, just coasting in her X5 to move her car. The car flipped out and took her a minute to get it to move again

Heh, I learned that yesterday. Wanted to move the car a foot or two forward so I left the door open, went right into park.

Buckle the seat belt, end of problem. If Anton Yelchin's Jeep had this feature he'd probably still be alive today.

I did this yesterday, took the wife shopping, she went to dispose of the trolley so I thought I’d back the car out, didn’t realise my door wasn’t fully closed, selected reverse and it moved and then thunk back into park, tried a further 2 times before I looked at the idrive screen and realised what was going on. The strange thing is that in all 3 attempts the car would start moving back before it would engage park. Wouldn’t it have just been better to not allow reverse or drive to be engaged at all if the door is ajar?

i don't even have a back up cam and I don't need to open my door to reverse.

If you do, your license should probably be taken away

BMW is not the only manufacturer doing it. I remember opening the door in a Jeep Cherokee demo and it engaged the parking brake

It actually came out on the Cherokee first and was put into the smaller models like Patriot, Compass, and Renegade. I know hey changed the shifter in the Grand Cherokee but I am unsure if it has that feature with the parking brake

Couldn't she just use her drivers mirror to see where she was going? This happened to me too because my drivers door wasn't close all the way.

My wife never used the mirrors or even the rear camera when backing up, she always turned around to look out the rear or rear quarter windows. I never understood why.

That's a good way to run over something below where you can see.
