This wish is going the way of the manual transmission.
Auto makers can achieve the mandated/required fuel efficiency by using electric assist vs hydraulic, at least for now. EPS can provide a 1-mpg gain over traditional engine powered hydraulic systems. I wonder though, can an electric pump used to generate the required hydraulic pressure be used instead of using an electric motor to provide the power assistance? BMW's system uses an on demand electric motor to provide the assist, so depending on the tuning of that system BMW can give various assist levels. To many of us the feel of varying assist provided by electric assist is different. On/off-center feel is where I notice it the most. Overall EPS is fine. Steering "feel" as to what the front tires are doing is a combination of a number of items in the steering system and not just what is providing the steering boost. Here is an interesting article to check out: http://www.caranddriver.com/features...n-test-feature |
