Sums it up really.

Yeap get you and I do love that 'full reheat' expression

I am missing my 330d a bit for the effortless torque/mpg combo, but the 35i can be driven under 1700 revs very easily too (that 8AT helps a lot as qell)

Big issue for me in the big torque argument is how limiting it is when you want to press on. BMWs insistence on not offering a LSD even as an option on the 330d is mystifying.

I'm with you on that F30AM. But it should be an option from new for those of us that like to 'make progress' when driving .

To be fair, I gave the 330D a hard time on a test drive, and the electronic diff worked remarkably well.

+1 the M135 is far far better than my e90 330d for getting that power down out of corners.

Allthough it did try and bite me yesterday as i exited a roundabout at full reaheat

Garage List
The whole 330d vs. 328i question was a bit lopsided for me. Comparing a 3.0 6-cylinder diesel against a 2.0 4-cylinder petrol (even if they did have similar bhp) was a bit like comparing boxers of different weights. A welterweight might be close to a light heavyweight on a 'how hard do they hit' scale, but in the ring it's not an even contest.

I'd be more interested in how the 330d powerplant stacks up against offerings from Audi and Mercedes? For example, looking at Audi's 3.0 diesel on paper there's:
  • 3.0 TDI Multitronic, 0-60 7.0 secs, 149 mph, 201 bhp, 400 Nm 295 lb-ft
  • 3.0 TDI Quattro S Tronic, 0-60 5.9 secs, 155 mph, 241 bhp, 580 Nm 428 lb-ft
  • 3.0 BiTDI Quattro Tip Auto, 0-60 4.9 secs, 155 mph, 308 bhp, 650 Nm 479 lb-ft

And the Mercedes 350 CDi engine is almost identical on paper to the 30D

Been looking at an R350L and it's a bit of a beasty

Driven the best one there 3.0BITDI Quattro, it is quick in a straight line , and 4.9 is way to optimistic, no way did it feel that quick, however show it a corner and Understeer and washing out transpire , another Audi failure.
PS) EDITED: almost forgot the Audi is just under 60K specced up.

Horrid cars IMO. Had an A4 a couple of years back and every damn thing went wrong with it. Got very depressed driving it. Big mistake. Never again.

I hear their Chief Engineer Michael Dick is about to retire. About time too.

My alternative to the 330D was the E350CDi Coupe. Got to say the Merc engine is a belter, I would rate it equally as good as the 30D if not better. (Sorry!)

But the gearbox 7G Tronic Plus is very auto slushbox.....such a shame.

Another niggle was the reliability of the engine.....I know a Merc indy and he has seen some horror stories regarding the V6 diesel.

Got a C Class 350 CDI Sport Saloon. Yes, great engine, but it rattles like hell on acceleration from rest. Wake the dead. The gearbox had an update to reduce its hesitation and was much improved. Still, not as good as a 330d IMO.

Maybe so but it's the only large MPV with AWD on the market

I had a F11 530D Auto, then the CLS350 CDI and I much prefer the BMW engine/gearbox combination. I couldn't really fault the Merc, I had no reliability issues and it was a very relaxed cruiser just not 'sporty' at all. Then there was the flappy paddles which just did their own thing no matter what I selected.

Yeah, manual mode on a 7G+ is useless, it changes gear when it likes......point?
