I'd always wait for the new plate.
There will be a difference in value, even at 5 years.

Once off setting the lower part exchange the difference will be negligible

Especially if current residuals keep falling as they are and couple with the release of the 'G' Model.

What's a 5 year old car worth these days ? £12k £8k?

If it was the olden days with ref changes once a year I might wait. But now they're every 6 months I can't see the point of waiting a month just for a different letter on the plate. A week maybe, just for the fun of it.

Mine is dues for pickup week 5 (last week of Jan) and I have no intention of waiting.

I would probably wait a few weeks as long as dealer / BMW kept hold of the car.

However, having a car sitting on the drive that was not insured ... No chance

As you say REG plates where important when it was changed yearly, now I don't even know most of time when new registrations occur.

I'm not using you as I currently have an F30. However, the car I'm getting is an M5 and the M5 side of the board is pretty much dead in the UK, there are far more characters here.

The dealer has one in my selected colour with all but 2 of my chosen options in group stock and can have it ready in as little as 10 days. I can retrofit the sunblinds at a cost of £216, the rear wouldn't be electric, but considering I normally put them in the car in around April and take them out in September, it's not really much hardship to have a "manual" blind - after all, I've survived so far without an electric one. Also, I could live without a heated steering wheel and was only speccing it as it was only £185.

Regarding the vlauations, I've just looked at the CAP guide price for 5 year old M5's. With the same mileage, a January registered car is worth £1,000 less as a trade-in than a March registered car, but the depreciation per month on the car is £500 at that time. Therefore, in real terms the future valuation is the same. At 3 years old, the difference is a little more, but the depreciation per month is also a little more, so this too works out at being effectively the same cost.

As I'll be hiding it with a personalise plate, it will only be visible for as long as it takes to get the V5C through for the new car anyway as the registration transfers are instantaneous now the system is online, so I was only concerned about future valuations.

Paul,
You haven't clarified yet if you would have taken delivery on the 27/28th of Feb, would the car be insured or not? I thought dealers are liable and must make sure all new cars they sell, are insured before delivery or collection is made. Can you actually insure a new vehicle several days before it is legally allowed on the road? I know you won't be daft enough to take it on the road before the 1st of March, but can you still get some sort of cover for off road insurance? Interested to know as i will get mine delivered on the 27th Feb if it is possible.

Just had an update from the dealer. My car will be there around the 4th Feb - so possible pickup in two weeks. But he'd assumed I would arrange pickup 1st March for the '16 plate. Checking my calendar that's another 4 week wait, so 6 weeks in total.

Not sure what to do. Doubt it'd have any real impact on future value, but that '16 plate does sound a bit better

if you didn't have a private plate to go on there would (in my opinion) be cause to stop and think. But if you're putting a plate on anyway its not even a consideration. Get the car ASAP surely?

M5 as well, nice. I'd be desperate to get into it...

TBH mate, and no disrespect intended - if you can afford a new M5 and pay cash - I'd have thought the trade in value difference of £500-£1k after 3 years is pretty irrelevant.

Now if you "want" a 16 plate that's a different matter but as you've said, you're putting a private reg on it anyway.

Just get the damn car and lets see some pics!

I'd forgotten about this thread and have had challenging conversations with the dealership in the last couple of weeks since starting it, trying to get them to put the numbers they quote me over the phone in writing in an e-mail or on paper for me to pick up from them.

It came to a head yesterday whilst I was in a meeting and an e-mail pinged on my phone asking me "are you buying the car or not as somebody else is interested".

I flipped out and as soon as the meeting was over sent a reply back telling them I was still waiting for them to put the numbers in writing and wasn't prepared to play their games, so good luck selling the car to somebody else. They came back pretty much straight away, but I told them they were too late.

They need to sell the car to me more than I need to buy it from them as the only reason I'm changing is that I’ve had the F30 335i for almost 2 years now and just haven’t bonded with it. Unlike my previous E92 330i, the 335i to me is just a car and is nothing special. I use it because I have to rather than it being something I want to go out for a drive in just for the sake of it.
